V "Lord Jeff," dramatic story of the training of boys for Britain's future Merchant Marine, introduces Freddie Batholomew and Mickey Rooney, com panions in "Captains Courageous" and "The Devil is a Sissy," in enter tainingly new characterizations at the State Theatre. Freddie portrays a boy, represent ed as a scion of nobility by crooks, who finds regeneration and a new destiny when sent to the English training school, part of the Barnardo Homes institution in England. Mickey is a student petty officer, first Fred die's Nemesis, later his friend. Sam Wood, who directed "Navy Blue and Gold," directed the new picture with rare skill. The desperate fight between the two boys, the great boat race, the mast-climbing contests and other nautical school thrills mingle with human and dramatic touches. Set? tings authentic and elaborate. Players, aside from several hun dred boys playing students, include Charles Coburn, Herbert Mundin, Gale Sondergaard, Terry Kilburn, Peter Lawford, Walter Tetley, and others. Thursday only "My Bill." Heralded as giving Kay Francis the most human appealing role in her career, the Warner Bros, picture "My Bill," based on Tom Barry's stage play, "Courage," open at the State Theatre today with a cast that also includes Bonita Granville, Anita Louise, Bobby Jordan, John Litel and Dickie Moore. The role played by the star marks a radical departure for her, since it is designed to enlist the audience's sympathetic appreciation rather than to impress with the glamour of per sonality. It is that of a woman nearing mid dle age but still young and beautiful in appearance who has been left a widow with four children in a small New England town and has proceded carelessly to dissipate the small for tune left her by her husband. This simple and moving tale was turned into a beautiful screen play, full of tenderness and spiritual brav ery, by Vincent Sherman and Robert son White, and the production was directed with a fine understanding of its human value by John Farrow.
