THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, HERTFORD, N. C, FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 9, 1938 PAGE TESTE 3 v 1 ,V wai xbjgl Behind The Scenes In American Business (Continued From Page One) lie largely has heard only th ver sion of business' opponents. There fore, announcement in New York by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company that it is cooperating with consumer or other public study groups caused quite a ripple in in dustrial waters as marking a new era in corporate public relations. The A & P, in announcing a $2,000 contribution to an Emergency Con sumers Tax Council representing women in some 100 New Jersey com munities, told the public frankly that it is cooperating with "this and simi lar organizations dedicated to the protection of the consumer from further rise in the cost of living as a result of punitive or confiscatory taxes levied on independent mer chants, chain stores, producers or distributors of any. kind . . . We feel the great need is to help provide ways and means of bringing out the facts. The people will form their own opinions. To this end, we are planning to augment cooperation with consumer groups with a program of paid advertising in the near future." Papers from coast to cyast editor ially are praising the m$ve. Typical is an 'editorial in Newsdom, a maga zine ffor publishers,, which said in part: "Business has every right to present its side of the case to the public, just as has the politician. The A & P . . . has a definite interest in helping to expose punitive or confis catory taxes levied on merchants, whether they 'be independent or chaiife, and in assisting in informing the public that the taxes must be passed on to the consumer. It does not contceal its motives and that in itself is worthy of praise. Let busi ness tear a page from the book of the A & P and speak out." Surplus Commodities Corp to pur chase 10,000,000 pounds of butter . . . Potato growers in 15 late producing states refuse to support proposed AAA marketing agreement .. .Gov ernment takes loss of from four to seven cents a bushel as wheat export plan begins with shipment of 451,000 bushels. SEES LOW PRICES Wheat prices for the 1939-40 mar keting year will remain low relative to prices in recent years unless there is a material reduction in acreage next year or a considerable improve ment in world economic conditions and in the world price level, predicts the U. S. Bureau of Agricultural Economics. CHAS. WHEDBEE, Commissioner. Sept.2,9.
