But sometimes, for various reasons, he .doesn't. v"We want a marriage license," said the boy, unnecessarily, when Mr. Ward answered hia knock at the door. The girl giggled. She looked so small on the dim porch that the register wondered if she was to be the bride or if it was to be one of the other two people still in the car. Sometimes, very young people, 'way under the age limits apply for a license which of course, must be denied. In the bright light of his office at the courthouse, however, Mr. Ward saw that the bride-to-be was much older than he thought her at first, and the matter of drawing a license got underway. In the meantime an interested by stander departed in search of a jus tice of the peace and returned shortly with T. E. Raper, who cleared his throat, adjusted his glasses and said solemnly, "join right hands, please." The hands trembled, but got to gether. The bride's brother and a buxom girl friend witnessed the ceremony, as did Ashley Fleetwood and a night roving newspaper reporter. "Please don't put it in the paper," the prin ciples requested the reporter, "we want it to be a surprise," and the re porter promised he wouldn't. The voice of the justice droned on for a few minutes in the quiet room, and ended with a very definite, "I now pronounce you man and wife"." The awed stillness lasted for anoth er few seconds, and then somebody laughed nervously. It was the bride's girl friend. Then everybody laughed and congratulations were in order. Unexpected night weddings are usually pretty quiet affairs in Hert ford, but this one was on a Sunday night rather early in the evening and a good number of people had gathered outside the courthouse. Best wishes were shouted and as the wed ding party headed south, there came a terrific clatter of tin cans tied to the car. Some jolly soul had decided that this wedding was going to have all the accessories. And so they were married.
