FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1938 BIBLE THOUGHT FOR WEEK THE SUPPORT OF FAITH: And immediately Jesus stretched forth Mb hand, and caught him, and said unto him, 0 thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? Matt. 14:31. A FORWARD STEP We'll offer a wager that no one will attempt a robbery on the prem ises of Frank Bray, eight miles out on the Elizifbeth City road. The buildings and grounds adjoin ing the Bray house, at night, are as well-lighted as a city intersection, and light discourages thievery, lhe chances are that vandals out for a night of ransacking smokehouses and looting farmyards will steer well to one side of the Bray farm. For even if the lights are turned off when not in use, they can still be snapped on at the flick of a finger, throwing the yard and whole set of buildings into instant brilliance. Rural electrification makes this possible, or maybe the power is gene rated locally. In either case; there'll be no stumbling over unseen obstacles in the dark, and no fear of wandering bad men lurking around the house or storehouses. The Weekly would like to see every farmyard in the county as well equip ped for lighting as the one on the Elizabeth City Road. The cost of in stalling such equipment, The Weekly believes, will be more than offset by the feeling of security such lighting will bring. At a later date, The Weekly will try to secure an itemized estimate as to the cost of lighting an average size farm layout. The loss on one wholesale meat robbery, we believe, would more than cover the cost. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR NOT Ouf FAULT October 26, 1938 Editor, The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N. C. Sir: If I remember Gorrectly, there was a recent letter addressed to you, the editor, inquiring into the parental feelings about the deplorable condi tion of our graded school building. If I remember still further correctly, this condition, according to, .,your "reliable sources" was' to be remedied before cold weathpr arrived! May I humbly ask If this improve ment has been accomplished ? And if not as I believe to be the case what is to the degree to be reached on the local thermometer before these "reliable sources" consider the weath er cold ? I have noted a thermometer reading below fifty degrees several times. JAMES EVART NEWBY Hertford, N. C. Editor's Note: If Hertford Gram mar School conditions in regard to fire hazards have been corrected, The Perquimans Weekly has failed toj publish a news story in which we be lieve the whole town would be ex tremely interested- We are given to understand, however, (from our "re-J liable sources") that the children no longer use the main stairway in' reaching the second floor. The main stairway is erected directly over the nnfirA-nrnnfpd fnrnap rnnm hut wrn ' fail to see the satisfaction in this ar rangement. The auditorium is still on the second floor . and, contrary - to State law, thejre are still no outside fire escapes. October 25th, 1938 Editor, The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, North Carolina. Sir: Are the Hertford people for or against Sunday movies? Maybe you know, or can find out. Certainly numbers of them are not, because every Sunday afternoon and Sunday night finds them leaving for the movies in Edenton and Elizabeth City. There seems to be no good reason why movies should be more harmful. ere than they are in our towns," Sunday or week-day. So far as I have observed there seemed to Jte no ill effects resulting' from the showing of "Snow White" here on Sunday. ' ; ... ; i Yours Inquiringly, , It. C. C. Hertford, N. C. Hert ford people, we know, do attend movies in both towns, but in reply, we would ask a question: Is there a law against Sunday movies in Hertford? If not, what stand would the local theatre management take on the question? The showing of "Snow White" would indicate to us that the theatre interest would favor Sunday movies for Hertford if public interest seemed so inclined.
