SO.W SCCBOL LESSQIi THE SACREDNESS OF HOME International Sunday School Lesson for November 20, 1938 Golden Text: "Keep thyself pure." I Timothy 6:22. Lesson Textt Exodus 20:14; Matthew f 5:27; Mark 19:2-18. Breakiiur the Seventh Command ment, condemning: adultery, strikes at the very foundation of human re lationship. As we all recognise, the fundamental unit of society is the home. No school, church, lodging place, or government can replace it. It is the safest and most certain man- ufacturer of honor, loyalty, high, ideals, and the lofty passions of man kind. It not only safeguards the continuance of the human race but it insures its progressive develop ment The beginning of every home is the marriage, which unites husband and wife and dedicates them to each other and the family which may come to them. Important, therefore, is the motive which leads the man and woman into this intimate and respon sible relationship. If it is high love, a desire to serve mutually, the home will usually be happy and permanent. If, on the other hand, marriage is used to purchase social splendor, to acquire wealth, to countenance pas sion, the results will be quite differ ent Human beings are not all beyond the possibility of error and of sin, however, and so, as in all ages our society has the problem of divorce. Back in Perea, as Jesus slowly pro ceeded on his last journey to Jerusa lem, his enemies raised this perplex- ing problem to harass hiffl, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife?" In those days of unequal rights, no question of the wife's re jection of the husband complicated their minds. The Pharisees antici pated trouble for Jesus regardless of his reply, for there were two schools of thought about this matter among the Jews. Moses had decreed that a man might divorce his wife "if she find no favor in his eyes because he hath found some unseemly thing (unclean ness, in the authorized version) in her." The interpretation of this va ried and in Jesus' day some followed each of the leading rabbis. Shammal expounded it to mean unfaithfulness, unchastity, but Hillel said it meant other reasons as well, and his follow ers enlarged it so that "if the wife cook her husband's food ill, by over- WOODVILLE NEWS W. Our modern refinements of the doc trine "incompatibility," as decreed. In our courts, have gone just as far to make divorce easy, convenient and excusable. One state (South Caro lina) permits separation but no di vorce, but elsewhere in America va rious grounds are allowed, some re quiring inldelity, but, as a rule, the Utaited States leads the world in its divorce ratio to marriages. Jesus avoided the trap of the Pharisees by referring to the Mosaic law, but explained that it was "for your hardness of heart" that such a rule was given. : He announced a new law, explaining how from the begin' of creation God had established the marital tie more strongly than any other, therefore, man was not to separate man and wife. Notice Mark's gospel does not even add the exception in the case of adultery. The modern church attitude is far from the strict doctrine. Dr. Nor cross holds, like Hillel, that cruelty, neglect, evil association, lack of re spect or helpfulness, justifies divorce and violates no word of Jesus. Others differ. We find Cora Harris protest ing against literature and entertain ment based on irregular relations and pleading that preachers use the marriage vows as texts once in a while "to search the conscience of di latory wives and delinquent hus bands." Another writer asserts that greater thought, in the contraction of marriage and not divorce is the reme dy for unhappy marriages, The innocent victims of the wreck ed home are the children, brought up in an atmosphere of hatred instead of love and helpfulness, and denied the training for useful lives that a real homelife would give them. When 'the disciples of Jesus scolded those parents seeking to bring their chil dren to him, he rebuked them and gave voice to the children's charter of religious rights end emphasized their trustfulness. How differently a sensational evan gelist acted in one city when he told boys and. girls seeking a conference in response to his general invitation that he didn't have time to bother with them! Herbert Hoover in a Y. M. C. A. ad dress said: "Life goes the way youth finally takes." Therefore, as Prof. George Herbert Betts declares: "The! greatest business of any generation is the education of its children. It is at this point that civilization succeeds or fails." If the home and family life be destroyed, what social unit can replace the inspiration and training which children should get there ?
