11 THIS MONTH ON THE FARM
"i. Spring work is in full swing on the
-
, farm, and April ushers in one oi me
. Imsiest months of the agricultural
.calendar. As reminders, State Col
lege specialists offer the following
kfiliggestions, which, if accepted,
i ( Should result in a more bountiful
,' harvest season:
' H p 'MiHOTvnorBr. Extension horti-
( culturist, advises the planting of all
r types of home garden crops. He
1 lists the following vegetables to be
planted this month, and the number
- of days after planting when they
should be ready for use: Beets, 60
days; beans, 40; carrots, 76; sweet
corn,, 60; cucumbers, 60; cantaloupes,
JZO; chard, 40; celery, 120; insn po
tatoes, 80; kale, 80; garden peas, 40;
lettuce. 60: onion seed, 130; okra,
fi00; parsnips, 125; radishes, 20;
'. BUUMIlt WWi oifi., w, o ,
. 30; tomatoes, 100; and watermelons,
v4 J. 0. Rowell, Extension entomolo
44i8 te11 farmers to delay planting
. corn until May if they have been
troubled in the past with stalk bor-
eris. However, he says that doubling
the amount of seed when planting
f - corn in low ground will usually allow
' for agood stand despite root worms,
" drill worms, and bud worms. In ad
dition, Rowell advises that injury by
flea beetles that sometimes eat small
round holes in vegetable seedlings
. and potato leaves can be prevented
,- bjr a Bordeaux spray, or by dusting
with rotenone duts.
j The suggestion of E. Y. Floyd, AA
1'. A executive officer, is: See your
AAA committeeman or county farm
ateent immediately and sign a farm
pfwK between April 16 to qualify for
Triple-A payments in 1940, if you
have not already done so. The 15tft
- is the final date for signing Farm
Plans for 1940, and a grower must
j sign one of these plans if he wishes
( to receive payment at the end of the
year.
F. M. Haig, professor of animal
husbandry, cals attention to the
need for care of young animals born
on the farm. Sanitary quarters are
doubly important for the young, and
, control of lice and other parasites
- will result in more profit from the
., dairy, beef cattle, or swine herd, and
. ' the sheep flock, he says.
. John A. Arey, Extension dairyman.
emphasizes the need for roughage to
i carry the cows over the winter per
iod. He suggests the growing of
ur tons of silage and two tons of
, good hay for each mature cow in the
dairy herd. Also, Mr. Arey advises
i that cows should be kept off the per
manent pasture until the ground is
and the grass has made a good
growth. '
J H W. Taylor, Extension swine
: specialist, says spring pigs should be
,. castrated when they are about five
"weeks of age. Soybeans planted in
rows and cultivated twive will fur
nish excellent grazing for swine from
J the time the plants are about 15 inch
4 es high until frost, he says. One

-V a full feed of corn and a good protein
supplement.
I Lewis P. Watson, Extension horti
culturist, recommends that sweet po
tatoes be bedded the first week in
April in order to have plants for set
- ting about June 1. Instead of sell-
",jfig the best potatoes, he continues,
and using the scrubs and culls for
seed, build up your own seed stock
by saving the best for seed. Select
' smooth, well-shaped potatoes of de
sirable color and free from disease.

A. D. Stuart, seed specialist. Many
dealers have sold out of certified
cotton seed at this time of the year,
and farmers should exercise caution
in buying any but the best stock
available. Where germination of
seed is'low, enough extra seed should
be planted to allow for the failure
of the poor seed to come up.
Three Important 4-H
Announcements Made
L. R. Harrill, State 4-H Club lead
er, comes forward this week with
three important announcements re
garding the 4-H program in North
Carolina. The first is that 4-H
Church Sunday will be observed on
April 28; another is that a Dairy
Foods Demonstration Contest will be
conducted for 4-H members of the
State this year; and the third is that
loans of as much as $75 are avail
able to club members through the
Farm Security Administration's Ru
ral Rehabilitation program.
The 4jH Church Sunday is an an
nual event, and last year Harrill
says he received reports at the State
College office of 39 organized pro
grams presented by county and com
munity groups. These ranged from
the preparation and distribution of
the church bulletin, to the presenta
tion of special music, giving inspira
tional talks, acting as ushers, taking
up the collection, conducting Vesper
services, placing flowers in the
church, and beautifying the church
grounds.
Miss Mary E. Thomas, Extension
nutritionist, is in charge of the Dairy
Foods Demonstration Contest. Coun
ty winners will be selected, and these
teams will compete at the State 4-H
Short Course at State College July
22-27 for the right to compete in the
National Contest at the National
Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Penn.,
October 12-19. Gold watches will be
awarded members of the winning
team from each of the four sections
of the United States.
The FSA loans will be made to
sons and daughters of FSA clients
for the purpose of buying calves,
pigs, chickens, and other livestock,
and they may be made for the. pur
pose of buying seed, plants, fertilizer
and the like for club projects.
Extension farm and home agents
in the counties will gladly furnish
additional information on any of
these subjects, Harrill said.

Shrubs, Trees Meet
Ne&is Of Farm People
Farmers and city people have dif
ferent problems in beautifying their
homes, says John H. Harris, Exten
sion landscape . specialist of N. C.
State College. ' In the city or town,
space usually is limited, but long
summer evenings allow time for the
attention to annual, and perennial
plant that; offer "most flowers for
the least space.
On the farm, the rush seasons in
the fields mean long hours and little
leisure at the very time flower gar
dens may be most in need of weed
ing, cultivating, and watering. (But
the grounds around the farm home
are usually ample for more of the or
namental shrubs and trees than those
of the town dweller.
"These two -sharp differences are
worth .- considering,". Harris said,
"when the farm family 'Consider?
plantings to .-improve the ,,h 0 m e
1 grounds., planting a few shrubs this
season, and a few more from time to
time, will soon make the home more
attractive, and will conserve time in
busy seasons.
"Shrubs and trees will need good
care and watering for two or three
seasons," the specialist continued,
"but after that, if they are well se
lected, good woody plants will prac
tically take care of themselves. What
work is needed can be done at odd
times and when farm work is slack."
Harris called attention to three
folders available at State College
which outline simple farm-home
grounds beautification. They are
Extension Folders Nos. 40, 41, 42,
and they are available free to citi
zens of North Carolina upon request
to the Agricultural Editor at State
College. No. 40 takes up "Arrange
ment of Planting"; No. 41 is a dis
cussion of "General Arrangements";
and No. 42 is entitled "Walks and
Drives." Farmers Bulletin No. 1826,
"Care of Ornamental Trees and
Shrubs" is also available upon appli
cation to the U. S. Department of
