T. Johnson, head of the county school system, ' He announced Wednesday that Jiimnie McCallum. of Colerain, has been elected to fil the post of band mstructor lor rerquimans acnoois this year. Mr. McCallum has taught band music at Colerain, but gave up his work there last year to enter a pri vate business. A native of Scotland County, the new director was highly recommended to the school board by C. L. McCullers, director of the Edenton High School band. He will teach band music at both tilt? mieii otiiuu oiiu hic 6 , j- t, j.,.- Grammar School, spending two days in Hertford each week. There are approximately 30 members of the high school band. , Bus Station Work Scheduled to open for business on the first of the month, the new bus station at Grubb and Church Streets is being equipped with plumbing fa cilities. The walls and ceiling have been painted, but it has not been learned who will be the agent. W- H. Bartlett, Elizabeth City contrac- tor, is doing the construction work.' Delayed By Flood Flood waters Wednesday had de layed the return to Hertford of Mrs. J. W. Zachary, who is visiting her parents in Yadkin. Yadkin County was one of those hard hit by flooded rivers due to unprecedented rainfall in the mountains last week. Leaving For Milwaukee ! Jesse Parker Perry, Irvin Nixon and Eldon Winslow are leaving with in the week for .Wisconsin to enter the Milwaukee School of Engineer-1 ing. They are planning to take a three-month course in welding and then work in aircraft construction, wiucn industry requires tne services of those traineo; in welding. Other guests at the Lane home Wednesday were Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Garrett, of Elizabeth City, who had dinner there. BRIDGE CLUB HOSTESS Mrs. C. R. Holmes delightfully en. tertained her bridge club on Thurs- day evening. Two tables were ar ranged for playing. After several progressions Miss Mary Sumner was presented high score prize and the! floating prize. Mrs. G. W. Barbee1 received prize for low score. j Those playing were: Mrs. D. F. Reed, Mrs. Henry Clay Stokes, Mrs-, i T. L. Jessup, Mrs. S. M. Whedbee, Mrs. G. W. Barbee, Mrs. R. M. Rid dick, Miss Mary Sumner and the hostess. Mrs. Holmes 'served delicious re freshments at the close of the game. HONORING MRS. HARRELL Mrs. J. H. Harrell was very gra ciously entertained on Sunday by her children at the home of Mrs. W. H. Cartwright. Hertford, Route No. 3. Summer flowers and potted plants were effectively used to make the home even more attractive. Dinner was served picnic-style on a long table on the lawn. A large birthday cake centered the table which was loaded with a large assortment of edibles. k After dinner, games were enjoyed by the younger people, while those not so young talked over old times.
