BETTER TO LIGHT A CANDLE
There's an old saying about the
Vdark that takes on a new meaning
now that such great darkness has
descended upon the world.
' "Better to light a candle," it runs,
, "".than to rail at the dark." Better to
do the small things that you and I,
as women can, do in our own homes
our own communities our own
- 1 towns han to sit still and moan
'; because" we can't make a speech to
the whole world or help draw up
! ' the laws in Washington.
Representative democracy,' like
many other desirable things, begins
at home. And that is where your in
tuence is supreme; where you set
the pattern and determine the atmos
phere. Teach your children respect
for other individuals and their opin
"4 ions. Teach them the meaning of
1 ' justice and tolerance and teach them
discipline by insisting on obedience
to reasonable authority. If this kind
of teaching was given in several
million homes the future of America
- would be assured!

, streets and highways has prompted
; Ronald Hocutt, director of the High
way Safeity Division, to set forth
some' safety suggestions for drivers
of wagons and. carts.
Hocutt said 13 persons were kiled
' and 76 injured in the state last year
'- , in collisions between motor vehicles
" and animal-drawn carts and wagons,
' and that several such accidents have
occurred in the past few weeks.
"The farmer riding along the
highway in his wagon or cart doesn't
stand much chance when an automo-
. bile or truck hits him," said Hocutt.
"In many cases he is killed outright,
and in practically every such acci
dent the person or persons riding in
the horse cart suffer injuries of
r some description. About the least
he can expect is that his wagon oi
i cart be badly smashed up and his
horse or mule killed or crippled. j
"For these reasons, persons who
"' drive animal-drawn vehicles on the
highways of North Carolina should
take every step possible to protect
themselves from the awful results
of a collision with a motor vehicle.
Some safety suggestions Hocutt
listed for drivers of wagons and
carts are:
Don't drive on paved highways ex
cept when absolutely necessary, and
then stay far over to the rignt, on
the shoulder when possible. Carry a
fairly bright light when on the road
between dusk and dawn, as required
by State law. If you have to turn
into a road or " lane to your left,
look both ways and be sure you have
plenty of time to get across safely
before you start to run. Don't drive
oulfpf a side road, path or lane into
a highway without first looking to
. , see that the ' way is dear. When a
car approaches from either direction,

councils, to Parent-Teacher Associa
tions and women's club meetings.
Above all you can take your belief
in democracy into the occupation of
your day as firm in your convic
tion of its importance as were the
great women of our pioneer days
who looked into each day's sunset
uncertain of what the sunrise would
bring except that' it would carry
with it another day of Freedom!

animal has eaten the plant."
The veterinarian says that the
outstanding symptoms of crotalaria
poisoning are: Loss of appetite
weakness and an unsteady gait, a de
pressed attitude on the part of the
animal, diarrhea, and bloody nasal
discharge.
"We are not trying to discourage
the growing of crotalaria in certain
sections of the State, but lespedeza
usually makes a much better legume
and is perfectly safe as a feed for
all types of livestock," the veteri
narian concluded.
Peeping Tom Caught
Here Saturday Night
William Gibbs, Negro, of Hertford,
was arrested late Saturday night by
Deputy Sheriff. Melvin Owens on
charges of peeping into the home of
Mrs. William Trueblood.
Charges of the same'will be heard
in the next term of Perquimans Re
corder's Court. Meanwhile, Gibbs is
out of jail on $100 bond.
The Negro was seen by Mrs. Hen
ry Olay Stokes, and identified by
her after his arrest.
