Sawn:?,1 According County M Mfetl FiiF Next Draft Quotas Men to BeCalled Janu ary 7; All White Men In This Quota Perquimans County will be called upon to furnish five white men foi Uncle Sam's Army on January 7, ac cording to word sent out from the State draft offices in RaOeigh. J. R. Stokes, chairman of the local 'ftdraft board, has not yet received, of ficial word that this is the local quota, but in anticipation of a call for more men, the local board has resumed the mailing of draft ques tionnaires to locall registrants. Thir ty questionnaires were mailed on Friday of last week. Quotas lor Negro draftees in Jan uary have not been completed and it is not known whether Perquimans will be called on to furnish any Ne groes for this call. The locall board had another vol unteer on December 19. Francis Jessup appeared before the board at that time but as yet has not return ed his questionnaire and therefore has not been duly classified. According to Mr. .Stokes the local board is ready for the next call, having seven white men on the wait ing list, who have already taken their physical examinations. These men are Francis E. Willley, Aubrey B. Umphlett, John R. Webb. Roscoe Stallings, Joseph B. Perry and Robert W. Morris. The next quota for Perquimans County will probably be filled from this list of men. The Perquimans County men will be sent to Fort Bragg, which serves as an induction station, and after they have been duly received by the Army they will be transferred to Fort Jackson, fe. C, and assigned to the 30th Division. Mailing of questionnaires will con tinue as the local board deems it necessary to fill the classifications and quotas as they come up. $1.25 Per Year. ecision On Naval Air Base Expected After January 15 Information Gained By Weekly Indicates No Action Before Date The Perquimans Weekly has learn ed that a decision regarding the Naval Air Base Qocation will not be forthcoming before January 15. Our informant was in Washington last week and conferred with Cap tain C. E. Rosendahl regarding the proposed air base and the locations being 'considered for the same. Captain Rosendahl intimated that due to plans, appropriations, and the like, it was probable that the com mittee, which will decide the spot for the establishing of this non-rigid air base, will have nothing definite to1 say until the middle of January. The Navy Department seeks to build a new base for it's lighter-than-air craft which will be used to patrol the coastline between Florida and Lakehurst, N. J. The Navy now has a similar base located at Lakehurst. The base when constructed, will cost approximately $6,000,000 and will have a crew of 300. Two locations in Perqunrulns Coun ty have been offered the Navy offi cials for their consideration, the J. H. Newbold farm on Pender Road, and the Nixon farm located between Hertford and Winfall. A prospectus of these plots was drawn up and mailed to Captain Rosendahl by Nor man TmebOood, secretary for the Hertford Lions Club. Other counties in . Eastern North Carolina are making strong bids for the new air base, but at the present time it will be nothing but a guess to say where it will be located. Chowan County is offering a site located near the new Albemarle Sound bridge .approximately six milles from Edenton. 'This site is about nine miles from Hertford. Tyrrell County, mistakenly an nounced as the spot chosen for the jiew base, is making a strong bidwfor it and has offered a site about five miles east of Columbia. r ( ) '.. .41 ;, to'otnlt .wr -W; "t-dsrd;and,E.l3 X Ka,VWoo3
