Notes And Comments No little comment has been made regarding the aid the local Boy Scouts furnished at the fire occui ring here last Saturuay. It was a "good deed" well done, and the boys can be congratulated for starting oft "Boy Scout Week" in such a line manner. Hats must be doffed to the ladies aain. Hertford's Parent-Teacher Association ladies are making the most of February, which has been set aside by them as "Curtain Month" and are actively and quickly raising a fund to supply a curtain for the Grammar School. More pow er to them, and. we are dead certain they will accomplish their aim. THE QUESTION OF AN A. B. C STORE FOR PERQUIMANS COUN TY seems to have stirred up a lot of talk. Some of it is interesting, some very foolish. The arguments pro and con are not always to the point. For instance to liken an A. B. C. store to a saloon is just as logical as to compare the merits of a symphony orchestra with the merits of a Farm-J All tractor! The presence or ab sence of an A. B. C. store in Hert ford will in no way affect the drink ing habits of the people of Perquim ans County. Our people who want wines or liquors are getting them when they want them and there is no trouble about it. You go to Eli zabeth City or to Edenton and get what you want at the market price under legal circumstances or you don't go quite so far and get what you want at premium prices with n particular respect for the law. In either case, the citizen is getting what he wants and the other county is getting the revenue on the articled sold. Off-hand, it would seem worth while to keep the revenue in the county. Also it might be worth while to use the A. B. C. store to help stop the illicit traffic now car ried on. It seems passing strange to us that the individuals and organ izations now opposing so loudly the perfectly legal A .B. C. store have made no move, nor raised a voice against '.ne illegal tratlic tnat is going on. Notes In The News: The decision to hold a fire drill, we think, is an excellent one. While no direct criti cism is made, certainly more ef ficiency can be applied in the Fire Department. With brand new, and exceptionally fine equipment, there should be no excuse for the Fire De partment answering a call without every man having a specific job to do . . . and do that at each fire. We suggest NOT one fire drill, BUT regular fire drills. Practice has a tendency to make perfect. Education For Country Living Recent statistics from the United States Office of Education show that only one in five of the rural high schools in the Nation is making a serious attempt to prepare youth for rural living. A study of 1,238 repre sentative schools in centers of 2,500 or fewer population indicates that the traditional academic curriculum is still the usual set-up. Only one third of those entering rural high schools graduate although the num ber entering has doubled in the last decade. Educators and interested laymen are focusing their attention on this serious problem. Denmark, through its Folk High Schools, has blazed a trail. The United States needs sec ondary school education for rural youth that will show them the satis faction and rewards of country liv ing, instead of focusing attention on urban occupations and opportunities. The curriculum should include a combination of practical and cultural subjects; it ought to prepare boys and girls to make a living, and at the same time develop their 'interest in art, leisure-time activities, and co operative Jiving. The satisfactions of country living are increasing steadily. Educators have both a duty and an opportunity to make ru ral education more meaningful and purposeful in terms of life values. Christian Science Monitor. HERTFORD SALUTES HERT FORD. That was a graceful gesture of the local Rotary Club to write to the dub in Hertford, England. No doubt that letter to the Hertforu Club in the Old Country contained a check of around a hundred dollars to show that the sympathy of the local Kotarians was practical as well ;s emotional. The good work of the Kotarians is indicative of the general ittitude of the citizens of Hertford. There is a very general desire on the part of our people to make evident in some practical way their sympa thy with the English people. Our folks are getting pretty sensitive when visitors from other towns ask what is being done in Hertford for the sufferers in the land 'that once was Merrie England. Of course, the answer to any question as to what we, as a community, are doing to help the world's sufferers in this greatest crisis of modern history is NOTHING. Well, not quite noth ing. A comparatively few of us did join the Red Cross at the time of the Annual Roll Call, but we would have clone that under any circumstances. The fact of the case is that many in this community have approached the chairman of the local Red Cross Chapter to see if it would be possible for some sort of work for war vic tims to be organized here. It would appear from the' results obtained that it is not within the range of the Red Cross activities to undertake the leadership of such work. However, relief work for war sufferers the homeless, the wounded, the refugees is being carried on in communities throughout the land no larger than Hertford, Under what leadership is it being; done? Why are the good people of this community denied the privilege of expressing their sympa thies in good works? We do not know; but we do know that we are a bit ashamed. If any reader of this column granting that it has one or two can make a suggestion we would be delighted to have it of some- revealed in the story of the ten lepers and the closing of the chapter contains a statement of conditions which will take place before the sec ond coming. . Jesus was interested in the devel opment of life to the fullest extent for each individual a development recognizing the primary importance of spiritual and eternal values. He fully understood that very often these higher qualities were contrasted unfavorably by the world with ma terial things of lesser worth. Jesus knew that one who sought to live by the principles of his kingdom would necessarily encounter temptations and obstacles as he pursued his way through a material world. While one who fell a victim to such delusions and traps would be harmed, Jesus spoke the greater condemnation which would be visited upon that one who caused him to stumble. Appar ently greater punishment awaits those who deliberately entice striving men and women r:om the path of rectitude than those weaker ones who succumb to the wiles and allure ments craftily placed in their way. An unforgiving spirit may be i. cause for stumbling to others and to that extent there seems to be the possibility of a ' thought connection between the first four verses. Jesus warned his disciples that a forgiving spirit was necessary for his kingdom, insisting that if one was done wrong he must forgive the evil doer. Some emphasize the words, "if he repent" as the condition precedent for the Christian requirements of forgive ness for wrong, but while this par ticular text may allow such an inter pretation, it would be so much out of harmony with the example and teaching of Jesus, that it should be rejected. As a matter of fact, on the cross Jesus prayed for the forgive ness of those who were executing him, that they knew not what they were doing. Failure to realize wrong doing negatives the fact of repent ance. The apostles asked Jesus to in crease their faith. The supplication indicates that the apostles realized the insufficiency of their faith and recognizee! in Jesus a power to in crease it. Jesus answered that faith "as a grain of mustard seed" would perform the impossible. The parable in verses seven to ten concern the attitude of the servant. When he has performed the duties laid upon him by his master, he should not expect any unusual re ward as a matter of right because he has only performed his duty. Bo, the lesson is, when the follower of Jesus has performed his task, he has no right to self-complacency and pride for' doing what he should' have done. The reward that comes to him will be a matter pf generos ity from his Creator. This parable was directed particularly to the pre tentious followers of Judaism, who paraded and boasted of their right eousness. H. Tucker presiding. During the report of standing committees, it was revealed by the chairman of the welfare committee that a total of 112 school-age chil dren scattered throughout the four welfare districts--Bethel, Saunders Grove, New Haven and Hertford had been clothed sufficiently to re main in school or enable them to enter school through the efforts of the P. T. A. and its many friends. In order to enlarge this clothes drive, the welfare committee of the local Negro organization is sponsor ing a musical program Sunday even ing, February 23, at 8 o'clock, in the High School Auditorium. Bishop Davis and the well-known Junior Choir of the Apostolic Church in Portsmouth, Va., will be featured on the program coupled with music from two outstanding quartettes of this section. Your presence at this program will spell clothes and shoes and school for some needy child. May we have your support? LEGALE see examples of pride of religion in many. As Jesus proceeded towards Jeru salem he met ten lepers who hailed him with the request for relief from their malady. Jesus instructed them to go to the priest, whose duty it was to examine and pass upon those who had suffered with leprosy so that if cured they would no longer be subject to the ban against con tact with others. The ten lepers set out and as they proceeded, an act of faith on their part, they realized that they had been healed. Only one, a Samaritan, Luke alone informs us, returned to Jesus to thank him. The others, too eager to re-enter their own lives, either were too careless to give thanks to their benefactor, oi put it off in the expectation of do ing so on some other day.
