C, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1941 Recent Bride Honored At Tea Given By Mrs. Thomas Nixon Highlighting the' social events ef the season in Hertford, was the love ly tea given by Mrs. Tno..;as Nixon Thursday afternoon from 4 to 5:30, 'complimentary to Mrs. Lucius BHanchard, Jr., who before her re cent marriage was Miss Ruth Daven port. The entire lower floor of the beau tiful home of Mrs. Nixon was deco rated for the occasion with an assort ment of SDrinsr flowers, featuring yellow daffodils, Japonica and other flowering shrubs, and was lighted by the glow from numerous candles. Wood fires burned in the grates in the spacious rooms. Mrs. Nixon' greeted her guests at the door. In the reception room, Mrs. Agnes Williams received, intro ducing them in the parlor to the re ceiving line, composed of Mrs. Lu cius Blanchard, Jr., the honoree, her mother, Mrs. M. W. Davenport, of Elizabeth City, and her sister, Mrg. Katherine Harris, of Norfolk, Va., and the bridegroom's mother, Mrs. Lucius Blanchard, Sr., of Elizabeth City. Miss Marion Morrow received in the drawine room and directed the callers lo uie uiniiig luum, wncie Mrs. Walter H. Oakey was assisted in serving by Misses Frances Maness, Mary Towe and Jocelyn Whedbee The dining table, where Mrs. W. H. Pitt pored tea, was covered with' an imported cloth of cluny lace and was exquisite in its appointments. The centerpiece was an unusually lovely arrangement of yellow jonquils. About 70 guests called during the afternoon, including a number of out-of-town people, as follows: Mes dames A. J. Scott, Jr., W. A. Smith, E. P. Brinkley, S. B. Smith and Mer cer Bailey, Miss Isabell Jeanneth, and Mrs. B. B. Dawson, al of Eliza beth City, and Mrs. Lloyd Horton, of Plymouth. WHITESTON CLUB MEETS Mrs. Leonidas Lane and Miss La cille Lane entertained the members of the Whiteston Home Demonstra tion Club at their home Thursday evening, February 6. The meeting opened by singing "Is Everybody Happy?" after which the Collect was repeated. The secretary read the minutes of the January meeting and called the roll. During the business session, Mrs. Arba Winslow reported on the poul try meeting she attended in Curri tuck. Mrs. Lucius Winslow was con gratulated on winning first prize in the Mail Box Contest. Mis. Mercer Yvinsiow rave a pro gram on Home Gardening in which Misses Lucille Lane, Delia Winslow, Clemma WinSlow, Edith White, Iris Winslow and Lena Winslow, Mrs. Al ah Winslow and Mrs. Ellis Stag ings took part. Miss Maness talked on "A Pleasing Place To Eat." During the social hour Miss Clem ma Yvinsiow directed a Valentine contest. The hostesses served a dainty sweet course. Those present were Mesdames Leonidas Lane, Ellis Stallings, Mer cer Winslow, DeWitt Winslow, Arba Winslow, Lucius Winslow, Verna Winslow, Charlie Baker, Jarvis Over man, Misses Lucille Lane, Iris Wins low, Edith White, Clemma Wins low, Delia Winslow, Annie Winslow, and Lena Winslow, Miss Anna Baker of Whiteston, and Mrs. Alvah Wins low, of Petersburg, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Spivey and sis ters, Ruth and Lucy Spivey, of Belvi dere, visited Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wilder Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Quincy spent Monday afternoon In Elizabeth City. Fourteen mem bers were present with Kather.rie White presiding. After a business session, a scale contest was held with Minnie Raye Dail winning high score, with 13 perfect scales. Mrs. Riddick told the story of Francis Hopkinson, first American composer, after which Helen Wray Baker, Doris Byrum and Dorothy Faye White played piano solos. Games followed, and delicious refreshments were served by the hostesses. The Juvenile Music Club met on Tuesday evening at the home of Margaret, James and Dan Assad with 26 members present. After an interesting program, in which Bett" Jean Winslow, Sammie Sutton, Mar garet Assad and Nancy Zachary played piano solos, and flute selec- j tions were given by Howard Pitt, I James Assad, Jean Webb Phillips, ' Martha Lee Tilley, Guy Cannon, Jean ! Irueblood, as well as an amusing selection by Pat Morris, Annette Cannon, Peggy Sawyer and Mrs. Riddick, games were played and Valentines given. Each child's for tune was told in a comic Valentine, and the children were then enter tained by Kathleen White and "her guitar. Refreshments were served by the hosts and hostess, assisted by Maude Holmes, Frances and Myr tle Elliott, Doris Thompson and Joyce Winslow. WHITESTON NEWS Preston Winslow, U. S. Navy, Nor folk, Va., was the week-end guest of relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. A. U. Winslow, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Wiggins and Lev erette Winslow visited Mr. and Mrs. Vann Spivey, of Hickory, Va., on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Winslow and family, of Chuckatuck, Va., visited Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Rountree and Mrs. Calvin Winslow on Sunday. Whisnant, Assist ant Extension Specialist in Home Management and House Furnishings, will give a demonstration on the making of slip covers at the Agri cultural Building on Friday, Febru ary 21st. Bonner Appointed To Important Post Congressman Herbert C. Bonner has been appointed chairman of the sub-committee on Coast Guard and Coast Geodetic Survey by Congress-! man Bland, chairman of the com-j mittee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries. I This was an unusual appointment as members usually serve more than! two terms before receiving sub chairmanships. Mr. Bonner's com mittee will handle all legislation dealing with the Coast Guard and the Coast and Geodetic Survey. New Chick Disease Appears In State H. C. Ganger of the N. C.
