A '", THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, HERTFORD, N. U, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1941 PAGE SIX f,i. i, V i Fcrtiizer Law May Be Amended Raleigh, N. C, Feb. 27. Changes in the State Fertilizer Law "to give farmers greater protection, to de crease the use of sand in various grades and simplify information on plant food guarantees," will be sought in the 1941 General Assembly, D. S. Coltrane, assistant to the Commissioner of Agriculture, said to day. He explained that under proposed changes,' the number of grades of fertilizer will be reduced and greatei use of grades recommended by the N. C. Experiment Station will be pro moted. Features of the proposed measure include provisions to: (1) state water insoluble and nitrate nitrogen guarantees "in percentage of the to tal," rather than in decimals, so as to furnish farmers accurate and un derstandable information on plant food guarantees; (2) permit the use of "not less than 5 and not more than 50 grades of fertilizer," which would eliminate useless grades, and should result in promoting economy for both farmer and manufacturer; (3) increase the units of plant food from 14 to 16 which would eliminate thousands of tons of worthless sand filler that is now costing farmers $10 to $12 a ton; (4) require that goods be stamped "net weight" rather than "weight" under the old law; (5) Pro hibit a manufacturer from lowering the quality of any established, regis tered brand; (6) Require basic slafj to be guaranteed as to both total and available phosphoric acid; (7) Narrow tolerances for deficiencies of plant food guaranteed, strengthening the penalty provisions; (S) Give op tions to the manufacturer to guar antee minimum per cent of magne sium oxide and calcium oxide, as well as minimum sulphur guarantees i.i general crop fertilizers; (9) change the provisions under which fertilizer jrrades are registered; (10) Provide that penalties be assessed on each plant food deficiency, disallowing ex cess in any one unit of plant food to cover the deficiency of any other ingredient guaranteed; (11) Require, if claimed, both a maximum and minimum sulphur guarantee in tobac co fertilizer.
