In the case of State vs. Andrew
Stephenson, charged with assault
with a deadly weapon on Edward
Layden, the jury found Stephenson
,not guilty. Layden, prior to the
trial of Stephenson, plead guilty to a
charge of participating in a fray.
The two men had an argument in
New Hope on last December 7, and
the charges came out of the affair.
Judge Stevens continued prayer for
judgment in the case of Layden, af
ter he had taxed Layden with costs.
The Stephenson case was the last
one heard on Tuesday.
Added speed was noticeable in
court on Wednesday as seven cases
were heard and verdicts rendered in
them before adjournment late Wed
nesday afternoon. Charles Whedbee
was acting as solicitor due to Cheojr
Morris being ill and unable to attend
the session.
Wilson Ferebee, Negro, plead guil
ty to the charge of theft of $4.50,
and was sentenced to the roads for

James Whitehurst, Negro, entered I
a plea of guilty to larceny of a
watch and $45. Judge Stevens sen
tenced Whitehurst to the roads for
12 months.
The IState took a nol prosse in the
case of Milton Harvey, charged with
possession of a stolen automobile.
The alleged offense was committed
in Pasquotank County and for this
reason the nol prosse was taken.
Judge Stevens remanded the case
of George Miller, charged with driv
ins drunk and reckless drivinsr. back
to the Recorder's Court and ordered
that the iudement therein be com
plied with.
Vernon Wia-cms. Neero. entered a
plea of guilty to the charge of being
drunk and disorderly and trespass.
He was sentenced to two months in
jail, sentence to be suspended upon
payment of costs and that the de
fendant be on good behavior for a
period of two years, and he is to re
frain from drinking any intoxicants
for a like period.
The jury found Charlie Russell
guilty of non-support of his child and
the judgment, 18 months on the
roads, suspended upon payment of
costs, and he is to pay $5 per month
for the support of the child; also $35
for a doctor bill.
Lester Phelps, Negro, was also
found guilty of the charge of non
support of his child. Judge Stevens
sentenced Phelps to 12 months on the
roads: suspended upon payment of
costs and $5 per month for the sup
port of the child; also doctor's bill.
The cases of Amos Mallory and
Luther Perry, both Negroes, "was
heard on Thursday, but the verdicts
in these cases were not available
when The Weekly went to press.
Mallorv was charted with larceny
and Perry was charged with assault
with a deadly weapon.
It is highly improbable that any
cases on the civil docket will be
heard during this term of court. The
length of the criminal docket car
ried court further into the week than
had been anticipated, at the begin
ning. Court will adjourn on Friday
evening.
