State Capital
The Seventh Grade of the Perquim
ans County Central Grammar School
visited Raleigh on April 29, and the
following account of the trip was
written by a member of the class.
"About 9 o'clock on Tuesday morn
ing, April 29, we left on a tour to
Raleigh. We went on a bus owned
by Paul T. Ricks and were accompa
nied by T. R. Ainsley, the principal,
and Miss Margaret White, the class
teacher. On our way we passed
through Williamston, Tarboro ihd
Rocky Mount, reaching Raleigh a
bout noon. When we arrived in Ra
leigh, we went to Pullen Parw to eat
our lunch.
After lunch we went to the State
Museum. There we met Mr. Ricks,
owner of the bus we were using.
Mr. Ricks directed us through the
rest of our tour. A few of the thingb
we saw in the museum were some old
spinning wheels, plows, birds and
animals of all kinds. From the mu
seum we went to the Hall of His
tory. There we saw many histori
cal relics of North Carolina.
Our next stop was at the capitol.
There we saw the Governor as he
stepped from his car. When we
went into the capitol we were ad
mitted to his private office and some
of us were lucky enough to shake
hands with him. While in the capi
tol, we visited the halls where the
Senate and House of Representatives
meet.
Other places of interest we visit
ed were the State Prison, the State
Hospital for the Insane and the
Blind School. At the Blind School
we were entertained with a reading
by a first grade child, who said he
had read fifty books in Braille writ
insr, and a little girl played "The
Sandman" on the piano for us.
After we left the Blind School, we
drove by IState College, Shaw Col
lege for Negroes, City Auditorium,
and St. Mary's School for girls. At
the Governor's Mansion we alighted
and had our pictures taken.
We returned by way of Wilson,
making our journey more enjoyable
as a sight-seeing trip. We reached
home about eleven o'clock. Every
one was tired but thoroughly pleas
ed with the day's journey, and every
one was better acquainted with the
City of Raleigh, the capital of our
State."
