PeiitPritBslls!il Firm On Loccl Mcit Perquimans County producers are harvesting and selling their peanut crop earlier this year than in many years, according: to L. W. Anderson, Perquimans County farm agent. The crop matured early and due to the hot dry weather, the vinea cur ed out in about 10 days, which is an exceptionally short time for them to remain in the shock. After hovering between 4V4 and 5 cents since the season opened a few weeks ago, peanut prices are showing added strength on the local market this week. Early sales were made mostly at 4 cents, but 5 cents is the common figure now, according to a general report coming from the Southern Cotton Oil Company early Monday morning. It is the first time this season that good bunch peanuts sold for that price, but it is generally believed that this price will continue for at least a week or ten days, it is reported. One report stated that a few farmers had started picking too soon after the rain, and that they were offering damaged peanuts for sale. One buyer stated that the practice, if followed in too many instances, is very likely to aepreoa the market! However, such cases are very few, it is understood. The Southern Cotton Oil Company has been designated as a sub-agency to purchase excess peanuts for oil and is now buying peanuts for oil at $66 per ton for the best grade. Clerk of Superior Ceui 4r Mct31,nov.7,M, to . - "it" North Carolina farmers who help produce the increased quantity of hogs, eggs, evaporated milk, dry skim milk, cheese, and chickens sought in the 1942 Farm Defense Program will have the protection of new Federal farm legislation against price collapse for these particular commodities, G. Tom Scott, Chair man of the State USDA Defense Board, pointed out this week. The Steagall amendment requires that whenever in the present emei gency the Secretary of Agriculture finds it necessary to encourage ex panded production of any non-basic agricultural commodity, he must is sue a public notice calling for the expansion. The same law directs him to use available funds for the disposal of agricultural commodities so as to support a farm price of the commo- dit.v nf not less than 85 per cent, of parity. Before the Secretary can discontinue a price-supporting pro gram, he must give sufficient public notice of the termination to permit producers to make a readjustment in production. Secretary Wickard has already giv en public notice covering, until De cember 31, 1942, hogs, eggs, evapor ated milk, dry skim milk, cheese, and chickens. Cotton, wheat and tobacco which are basic AAA com modities are supported through loans at rates based on 85 per cent, of parit7. "This new development is proof that the national farm program can be used to protect the income and se curity of the farmers who answer America's call for greater production of the vital foods," Mr. Scott ex plained. "Fortunately, that protection is not required now, because the farm prices of every one of the non-basic commo dities listed is well above the 85 per cent, of parity level. But farmers can plan their 1942 production in the . knowledge that prices can and will be supported, should it become neces sary." BURGESS NEWS Mr. and Mrs. J. B.
