It's YourvRed Cross
The annual Roll Call of the Red
Cross offers Americans an oppor
tunity to become associated with an
organization that serves human be
ings in their direst need.
Whether in war, or in peace, the
stricken are tided. It is an amazing
undertaking, made possible because
average Americans, like those of us
in Perquimans County, contribute
relatively small sums to keep the
work going.
Naturally, at this time the war
work of the Red Cross receives much
attention. Thousands of volunteer
workers, all over the United States,
are busy preparing garments and
bandages to be used by those afflict
ed by the grim Spectre of war. Oth
ers serve as the ministering hands
to carry aid to suffering individuals.
It is not permitted for us all to
do the actual work of the Red Cross,
whether in war or in peace, but it is
our privilege to take part in the
labor of mercy by .providing our
share of the money that is necessary
in the continuance of this great ser
vice to mankind.
Mr. Churchill And
Messrs. Lloyd
Prime Minister Churchill lifted
only the edge of official' silence which
veils the Admiralty's record of the
battle for safe ship-lanes. The bar
est details were disclosed to the
House of Commons. The members
know, after weeks, of waiting, that
almost l,O0O,O00v tons of Axis ship
ping has been spAf. OT sertously jdam
aged in the pan'four months. Brit
ish shipping losses which in June were
at the rate of nerfrly half a million
tons monthly, now have been cut to
180,000 tons monthly.
None of the reasons for this piece
meal victory were given. Mr. Church
ill did not stress, for instance, the
probability that R. A. F. bombings
have driven much Nazi transporta
tion from battered rail lines to even
riskier coastwise shipping along the
Channel and North Sea shores. ' He
did not reveal the story of constant
Mediterranean patrolling by the Roy
al Navy in search of North Africa
bound Axis convoys escorted by
Italy's fly-by-night navy.
Mr. Churchill faced a Commons
criticism of present government ef
forts and clamoring for action to help
Russia against the Nazis. He could
be expected under such circumstances
to make maximum use of the facts
to meet the political needs. But his
encouraging disclosures were given
strong support in the announcement
made the same day by Lloyds' ship
ping agent that war-risk insurance
rates on Atlantic crossings have, been
reduced by 25 percent.

GARDEN-. CLUB MEETS
The Home and Garden Club of
West Hertford met Friday evening
in the home of Mrs. C. M. Harrell
with Mrs. Riddick Chappell and Mrs.
Harrell as hostesses. The meeting
was called to order by the president,
Mrs. E. L. Reed. A song "For the
Beauty of the Earth" was sung by
the club, after which the Collect was
repeated. The president offered a
Thanksgiving Prayer. Mrs. William
Tucker, accompanied by Mrs. R. G.
Tucker, sang as a solo, "Count Your
Blessings." After the business ses
sion, Miss Maness gave an interesting
talk on bookcases; the different cas
es that could be had at small expense
and the placing of them with books
and magazines at convenient places
in the home.
During the social hour the club
members wrote a Thanksgiving poem,
each one reading her poem to decide
famous Lloyds. The renewal of con
fidence by these case-hardened ex
perts whose very livelihood hangs on
their accurate assessment of the
chances of a ship's "coming through"
is strong eulogy of British victories
