To keep every farm machine in
Perquimans County in top-notch con
dition and place every usable piece of
equipment in shape vitally-necessary
if- Perquimans 'CWnty is to 40.
its part in the 1942 Farm Defense
Program, declares L. W. Anderson,
secretary of the County USDA Dei
fense Board. ' ..V
With the manufacture, of new ma
chinery and equipment in 1942 shary
ly curtailed because of defense de
mands on supplies of steel, copper,
and other metajs,. farjners , 1J have
to depend more upon existing- ' ma
chinery, Mr. Anderson explained. In
addition to the scarcity of new (equip
ment, farmers may find the available
farm labor limited in 1942.
Any difficulty in obtaining ' parts
or materials need for the repair ol
farm machinery should be reported
immediately to the County USDA
Defense Board, said Mr. Anderson.
The Board will attempt to help the
farmer or the dealer obtain the need
ed article. Some local or temporary
shortages may develop because of un
usual demand for certain replace
ment parts, but manufacturers will
be able to secure sufficient metals to
produce the necessary parts. Allo
cation of steel and other metals will
be made manufacturers in order to
meet the requirements, provided
farmers do not wait until spring to
place their orders.
County USDA Defense Boards, act
ing on the request of Secretary of
Agriculture Claude R. Wickard, are
urging farmers to check all machin-
ery and equipment for possible worn
or ; damaged parts and to order re
placement 'parts Immediately. Early
orders can be expected to, get right-of-way,
said Mr. Anlersoh, and , by
acting without delay, farmers may be
able to assure themselves of obtain
ing their needs. , . ,. . '
"If many farmers put off ordering
repair parts, some wiirhave to ,go
without them, and valuable crops may
be lost as a result," warned Mr. An
derson. -: - .
"It has always - been- good farm
practice to use farm equipment as
long as possible and to make neces
sary repairs in the off -season, but
now it is a patriotic duty in National
Defense as well," concluded Ms,
Anderson.
