SOAY SCHOOL LESSON JESUS' DEATH AND BURIAL International Sunday School Lesson for June 12 ' Memory Selection: 'I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays aown his life for the sheep. John 10: 11. Lesson Text: Luke 23: 33.38, 46; Mark 15: 34; Matthew 27: 57.60. Symbolically washing his hands Pi late allowed the Jews to proceed with the killing of Jesus. No one knows for certain the exact location of the scene of the Crucifixion! Calvary, or Gol gotha, meaning "The Skull" was eith er northwest of Jerusalem, in the present k Christian quarter, where stands the church of the Holy Sep ulchre, or north outside of the Da mascus gate, beyond the present Mo hammedan quarter. The former is the traditional site and five religious sects are rivals in conducting services and caring for it. Two thieves were crucified along with Jesus. One reviled' him for not rescuing them all from their fate. But the other recognized the .goodness of Jesus' and rebuked his companion, call ing his attention to the fact that they, at lflast, deserved their fates while Jesus Vas innocent. This thief asked Jesus to remember hi min his kingdom and Jesus promised him that he Would be with him in Paradise. No one reading the gospel accountof this solemn scene can fail to be moved by a conviction 6f its sincerity. Hanging on the cross and enduring the torture of the crucifixion, mocked and ridiculed by the soldiers and his Jewish enemies, Jesus seven times spoke. First, it was a plea for the forgiveness of his murderers. Then, his promise to the supplicant robber. Third, he commended his mother to John. Fourth, he asked God why had he forsaken him. Fifth, an expression of physical agony, thrist. Sixth, a word of success, that his task had been completed. Last, it was aolemn commitment oi ms spirn into raie hands of his Father. Matthew tells us that, when evening was come, Joseph, a rich man from Armathaea, who "ajso was Jesus' dis ciple," went to Pilate and asked per mission ,to take the body of Jesus down from the cross and bury it. Pi late gave his consent and Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth and laid it in his new tomb, which had been hewn from a rock in the hillside and in which no body had ever been laid before. In order to protect it from prowling animals, a huge stone was rolled up to the door of the tomb and then Joseph-departed. Another account tells us that the Jews, fearfuHest the disciples of Jes us would 'come in the night and steal 'the body and then claim that he had fulfilled bis prophecy of rising from the dead, went to Pilate and asked for an official seaUo be placed on, the tomb and Roman- soldiers to guard the entrance. Pilate xonsented and this was done. . We are reminded that there is dan ger of our reading about the wonder lifo and tlift .tprrihleness of his death, without -paying any heed to the truth that In living anddyingTis he did, he laid demands upon us of , loyalty to him, of faithful following of his way to the cross. BE A BETTER CITIZEN! GO TO SOME ; f aiURCH NEXT sukMy TliiSanJ Jofe of hwm Baseball has been a healthy and wholesome influ ence in the lives of American youth. It has taught them the lessons of fair play and obedience to rules in all. human relations. Like other clean sports, it has furnished an outlet for youthful energies and enthusiasm. The delinquency in America today it traceable to idle time spent in street-loafing and back-alley ses sions with questionable associates rather than in healthy, constructive activities. In contrast, it has been said that the character and stamina shown by American boys on the battle fields of the world was built up on the sand lots of this country in clean and invigorating sports. Only a nation founded on the concepts of Christi anity can produce this fair-minded and honest sports manship. Only by upholding such standards as the Golden Rule can we expect our youth to engage in constructive spare-time activities. Thus we find that religion is the true answer to delinquency. So that Christian teachings may become a greater part of our national life, we must bring our youth into the Church where they will learn to live and play by the Golden Rule. THE CHURCH FOB AIL T. . ALL FOB THE CHURCH The Church la the greatest fac tor on earth for the building oi character and good citizenship. It ii a itorehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are lour sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and sup port the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake ot his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and ma terial support.
