Plant Small Grains Early Expert Advises Small grain crops should be plant ed early rather than late in the fall, if they are to be given the oppor tunity of making maximum yields", say Extension agronomists at State College, Usually growers get busy with the marketing of tobacco and the har- j vesting of cotton and peanuts and Jet the proper time for small grain planting- slip by, the agronomists report. The plants do not have a chance to build a good root system and get set for the winter freezes. Lower yields result. In addition to planting early, the agronomists also advise an increased acreage and proper fertilization at planting because extra feed supplies are needed to help offset the exist ing shortage. Planting dates will vary in each section of the state. Hessian fly-free dates should be observed. The agronomists also suggest the early planting of crops for hay and temporary grazing. In the Piedmont, t i ti if 1 ing of alfalfa in the latter part of August and September. Also, barley, oats, and rye make good early graz ing in this area, when planted in August and well fertilized. A large number of crops can be planted in the mountain areas in August. Alfalfa leads the list fol lowed by blue grass, bur clover, crimson clovfr, hop clover, orchard grass, redtop, hairy vetch, and white clover. The agronomists report that North Carolina is blessed with opportunities for growing an exceptionally large number of feed crops and urge that they be planted at the proper time to insure good yields. Perquimans Training School In Session The Perquimans Training School at Winfall, which opened early as usual to allow for the agricultural holidays, is now closing at 1 o'clock each day to permit the students to work after school. The faculty hopes this assistance will alleviate condi tions during cotton picking time. The faculty at the school is the same as last year with the exception of one new teacher, Mrs. Whitehead, who is substituting until a successor for E. L. Fair can be obtained. The New Farmers of America, an organization of the school, held their first meeting last week with Lorenzo Newby presiding as president and K. A. Williams as advisor. S the market will be flooded and large quantities of this valuable food crop will be lost, say Extension Service officials at N. C. State College. They point out that the effective ness of any support pnce program depends on the farmers themselves. If potatoes are "dumped" on the market at one time, particularly those which have not been properly harvested and cured, support meas ures are bound to prove inadequate. In order to take care of the bump er crop, the officials suggest that growers provide adequate curing and storage facilities, and market the crop in an orderly manner. They ask distributors to make plans for handling large supplies. To consum ers, they suggest that increased amounts of this nutritious and tasty food be eaten as it comes to the market. Otherwise, waste will re sult. The Extension Service urges North Carolina growers to make use of to bacco barns, vacant store buildings, and other places which may be con verted into sweet potato storage plants. This is particularly impor tant in the western section of the state where there has been an ex ceptionally large increase In acreage. Thev suirzest that growers with storage problems outline their facil ties and ask help from the Agricul tural Engineering Department at State College, Raleigh.
