Anglo-American Team ,
"The speed with which the mighty
British and American armies in
France were bitiK up is almost in
credible," declared Prime Minister
Churchill, in his recent speech to the
House of Commons.
Giving as much information as
possible "without telling the enemy
anything he does not already know,"
the Prime Minister said that in the
first twenty-four hours, a quarter of
a million men were landed in Nor
mandy, "in the teeth of fortified and
violent opposition."
By the twentieth day, "a million
men were ashore" and "there are
now between two and three million
men in France."
Mr. Churchill points out that the
"armies are equipped with the most
perfect modern weapons and every
imaginable contrivance of mottern
war." He adds that "immense artil
lery supported all their operations .
and enormous masses of armor of
the highest quality and character
gave them extraordinary offensive
pover and mobility."
Moreover, "many hundreds of
thousands of vehicles sustained their
movements. Many millions of tons
of stores already had been landed
and the great bulk of everything over
the open beaches or through synthetic
harbors." 1
Mr. Churchill paid tribute to Am
erican soldiers for "their' valiant,
ruthless, battle-worthy qualities," and
to the "skill of their commanders and
excellent supply arrangements." Con
' sidering the small regular army of
the United States and its lack of a
great body of troops or munitions
four or five years ago, he said, "The
American achievement is truly amaz
ing." After paying generous tribute to
the Americans, Mr. Churchill entered
into an explanation of the "worthy
contribution" that has been made by
his own country. Saying that "after
120 day 8 of fighting we still bear in
cro.ss-cnannel roops the proportion
of two to three in personnel and four
to five and a half in fighting divi
sions in France."
Casualties almost exactly follow
the numbers engaged, with the Brit
ish losing 90,000 men killed, wounded
and missing, and the United States,
including the invasion of Southern
trance, oer 145,000. Says Mr.
Churchill, "Such is the price paid In
.blood by the English-speaking de
mocracies for the actual liberation of
the soil of France."
Thqse: present included Mrs. Tom
Madre, Mrs. Jake White, Mrs. J. P.
Chesson, Mrs. ' W. 0. Hunter, Mrs. J.
T. White, Mrs. F. S. Long, Mrs. E.
Y. Berry, Mrs. C. S. Jackson, Mrs.
Jake Chesson, Mrs. Ed Harrell, Mrs.
