High-potash fertilizers are a good investment.
With prices of potash still at low prewar levels
and prices for farm products at high wartime
levels, greater profits than ever before can be
obtained for every dollar spent for this necessary
plant food.
Not only maintain but build up the fertility of
your soils. Now there is plenty of potash to make
the high-potash fertilizers recommended by your
official agricultural advisers. Use these fertilizers
in the amounts suggested for your particular
soils and crops.
Write us or further information and fret literature
on the practical fertilization of crops
Sixty-one pressure canner clinics,
to serve every county in North Ca
rolina, will ibe held during February,
March and April by the Agricultural
Engineering Department ,and the
Home Demonstration Department of
the State College Extension Service.
In some areas two counties will co
operate to hold a clinic at a central
location.
Safety valves, pressure gauges,
pet cocks and the seal between the
lid and the kettle will be checked
with special equipment developed oy
the Extension engineers. Since it is
very difficult to obtain repairs Oy
competent workers, the engineers
will install defective safety valves
and gauges at cost. ,
The pressure canners must be thor
oughly cleaned and put in condition
as if for operation before they can i
be checked. In addition to defective I
valves and gauges, the canners will I
be thoroughly checked for leaks of
all kinds. Unless the canners seal
properly, the desired pressure cannot
be maintained.
Last year clinics were held in
many sections of the State and so
great was the demand for this ser
vice that it was decided to extend It
to every section of North Carolina
this year.
"Every pressure canner should oe
thoroughly cleaned and checked this
winter, with repairs where neces
sary, so that it will be ready to do a
full job next summer," says Mrs.
Mary Lee McAllister, Extension eco
nomist in food conservation and mar
keting. "Gardenjng and food con
servation will be just as Important
this year as last and we should save
our surplus fruits and vegetables so
as to lessen the demand on manufac
tured products."
