scholarship was awarded her through
the Child Welfare Department, under
the supervision of Miss Helen Hall
Smith, supervisor.
Miss Knowles has been granted
a leave of absence from her local po
sition and will leave Friday to begin
her studies. ' She will return to the
local position, following the comple
tion of the course at Chapel Hill.
Firemen Called Out
Twice Tuesday P. M.
Hertford's fire department answer
ed two calls Tuesday afternoon with
in a short time of each other, both
blazes being at the Hertford Colored
School. A small blaze was extin
guished in an out building on the
first call and the department was
called again to the scene when smoke
was noticed coming from the build
ing, but no blaze was found the sec
ond time.
