A new summer leaf lettuce called
Rlobolt has been announced by the
' Department of Agriculture, and is al
; ready being increased by seed grow
; era to make it available to gardeners.
It will be listed in the 1946 seed cata
; logs. This new lettuce withstands
'. midsummer temperatures without
, quickly shooting or "bolting" to seed.
If plants are set 10 to 12 inches apart
and only the basal leaves are used as
they reach a desirable size, lettuce
may be harvested from the same
plants over a period of several weeks,
making it a very desirable home
. garden variety. Slobolt has frilled
, light-green leaves that have the very
wrinkled effect described as savoyed.
The plants are of moderate size and
the seeds are black.
Ceiling Price Raised For Potato
Shipments To Dehydrating Plants
Country shippers of white potatoes
and onions who make carlot deliveries
to dehydrating plants may add 14
cents a hundred pounds to their ceil-
ing price for services required in car-
lot distribution, says OPA. Country
shippers have always been permitted
to add 14 cents a hundred pounds to
the ceiling price of potatoes for car-
lot sales delivered at a terminal mar
ket or other wholesale receiving
points. However, many dehydrating
plants are located in potato producing
areas and are not in terminal mar
kets or at other wholesale receiving
points. The OPA provision is ex
pected to make it easier for dehydrat
ing plants to obtain supplies of white
potatoes from nearby country ship
pers. It is also expected to free
freight facilities for other important
uses.

Health Of Nation Shows No
Serious Decline
Despite the strains of three years
of war-time living and working, and
an increasing shortage of physicians,
psychiatrists, nurses and hospital fa
cilities, the physical and mental
health of America's civilians shows
no indication of a serious decline, the
Office of War Information states in
a comprehensive report on the state
of the nation's health. It adds, how
ever, a warning from Surgeon Gen
eral Parran that our lines against
disease are lightly held, and that our
shortages of health and medical man
power leave us vulnerable to a
breakthrough on many fronts. The
shortage of doctors continues to be
more acute in rural areas than in
towns and cities. Sanitation in many
rural parts of the country remains at
a low level. Correction of deficien
cies in the nation's sanitary equip
ment would require construction of
about 11,600 water systems, adequate
sewerage facilities in more than
10,500 communities, safe water and
privies for 5,000,000 rural homes, 400
milk pasteurization plants in 84
States.
