PAGE TWO THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, HERTFORD, Wv C FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 21. 1945. V SCOUTING VIGNETTES By Peter Carlton It is not an infrequent occurrence that accidents occur which might hnvA Kmh nn.vf.nfjw. wnk th vic tims trained in self-preservation, or in readiness. The Boy Scouts have an Emerg ency Service Corps which is described in the booklet entitled "A Guide For Emergency Service Trainers and Leaders. bmphasis is placed upon the fact that the Emergency Service Training Plan is one in which all Scouts of any age may take part. Dr. James E. West, former Chief Scout Executive and editor of Boys Life, speaks of the program as "an intensification and application of the same Boy Scout program which, over a period of more than 31 years has shown itself to be an excellent build er of boys into young men of good character, trained for citizenship. Our literature, including the Handbooks and Scouting Magazine, are full of the skilld needed by Scouts and meth ods for using them, in emergency service." Disaster itself, it is pointed out in this booklet mentioned in the early part of this article, is in the main, the task of adults, however, the Boy Scouts of America recognize the American National Red Cross, com munity, county, State and Federal re sponsibility in time of disaster and desire to cooperate as it has in 'the past. So far it has been found that this cooperation was welcomed. In carrying out the Emergency Service Program, local Councils will work with and through the "Commit tee on Disaster Preparedness and Re lief" of the appropriate Red Cross chapter. In cooperating in matters of government (community, county, State) responsibility, local Scout Councils will, work with and through the appropriate government authori ties. Syr - l S l A LOT of our patriotic neighbors left home to serve their country, either in the armed services or in war industries. If you are one of them, we want you to know there is a warm welcome and a job wait ing for you here. We hope you will come back to make your home here among your old friends and neighbors. This is a good town with a lot of fine people and a fine future. Plenty of Jobs Hern In addition to the opportuni ties here with which you are familiar, some new ones have developed during the war. For instance, a lot of people arou t here have been making good money, working in pulpwood. The tremendous war-time de mand for pulpwood will con tinue because of the civilian demand that has been piling up and the many new indus trial uses that have been dis covered. Pulpwood has no re conversion problem. And that is typical of most of our business here. It runs along pretty steadily no big ups and downs. You can enjoy security here and a nice way , of living that doesn't cost every penny you make. So come on back home to stay! We'll be mighty glad and proud to have you with us again..
