IHfc I'KUlR'dMANH WKUMA, 'lUUrUKU. f.. U fr'timA?, FEBRUARY 7, .1947. 1 I Saving Bonds Se!3s In Perqiilmsns Hit $178,941 For 1946 Sales of United Savings Bonds, Series E and G, in Perquimans Coun ty during the 12-month period end ing December 31, 1946, totaled $178, 941.80. Broken down by series the year's sales, at issue price, were as follows: E bonds, $148,641:80; G bonds, $30,300.00. This information was contained in an annual report on U. S. Savings Bonds sales issued this week to R. M. Riddic,k Jr., Perquimans County Sav ings Bonds chairman, by Allison James, State Savings Bonds Director, in Greensboro. Mr. Riddick announced, that ac cording to the report, sales of Sav ings Bonds for the entire State for the same period were: E bonds, $61,661,390.88, F bonds $6,522,866.00, G bonds $30,008,800.00. "Despite price increases and dis ruptions of production in the first full year of peace since 1941, Savings Bonds in both the county and state have exceeded all expectations," Mr. Riddick stated. "This huge backlog of savings, together with the war time bond savings, of which 70 per cent is still in the hands of the pur chasers, will go a long way toward maintaining a stable economy and in avoiding a depression in Perquimans Cqnnty and in our state," Mr. Riddick said. "The continued high .volume of Sav ings Bonds sales is a tribute to the thrift and financial good sense of the people of our county and state," he continued, "and also is a tribute to the splendid support of our banks, savings and loan associations, news papers and radio stations, as well as many other volunteers and volunteer organizations that are carrying on in this' important peace-time Treasury thrift program." . In conclusion, Mr. Riddick said that we must keep right on saving and building for the future with Savings Bonds. "A dollar saved is better than a dollar earned these days," he said. hog Measure Is Adopted By Grange The North Carolina Grange has re quested the' General Assembly to es tablish the International log rule "and no other" as the standard scale for measuring logs and timber in the State. The decision followed a controver sial hraring conducted by the Grange expcutive committee on whether the Internationa! rule or the Doyle rule, now used, is the fairer and more prac ticable method for determining the board feet of timber. The Grange claimed a 16-foot log, 10 inches in diameter, measures only 36 board feet by the Doyle rule, com pared to 64 board feet if measured by the International rule. Use f the Doyle rule, as now prac ticed in the State, prevents the far mer from obtaining full value for his timber, the Grange contended. , Close Second It may b trup that there is no fool like an old fool. A Daniel Come To Judgment Just after a new tax assessor had taken office, a citizen orta certain mu nicipality was astonished and dis mayed by the receipt of a notice that under "personal property, he was taxed $24 as the possessor of one goat. He visited the new tax assessor and demanded an, explanation. "Why, I had to obey the law,'r was the calm rejoinder. "Law? What law?" snapped the man with the tax bill. "Just this," replied the assessor, pointing to a passage in his law book, "It says right here, 'For all property bounding and abutting on the high' way, $12 a foot'."
