SOAY SCHOOL LESSON Daniel Stands By His' Convictions International Sunday School Lesson For May 30; 1948 Golden Text: "But Daniel purpos - ed in his heart that he would not de ' file himself with the king's dainties, nor with the wine which Jie drank," Daniel 1:8. Lesson Text: .Daniel 1:8-21 The story of Daniel is almost too familiar to be repeated here, but the facts as related in the first half of the book of Daniel need to.be emphasized particularly, Daniel, a young Hebrew nobleman, had been carried captive to Babylon along with a group of young men of proved in tellectual ability and physical, per fection, S.-.' , ' i This company of choice youths had been selected for service 'to the king after a period of special training. They were destined to become teach ers and scholars of the 'culture and learning of Babylon and were to be attached to the king's court.. To this end, they were assigned to a daily routine for three years, eating "the . king's meat" and drinking wine from the royal cellars. ' There were three young men in the selected group who were not al together pleased with the life con fronting them. They were Daniel, Hananiah, . Misheal and Azariat. Dan iel was evidently the leader of the group. i When Daniel saw the unholy pagan way of life he seemed destined to live and " that it involved giving up the simple life to which he had been accustomed,': - he "purposed in his heart" that he would refuse to de file himself with the portion of the king's meat or drink the wine set be fore him. The easier thing for Daniel to have done was to do," as so many people do today accept the customs of those into whose midst one moves, and, in the words of the axiom, "When in Rome, do as Rome, does." However, Daniel had convictions and he also possessed the courage to do something about these convic tions. He therefore requested that he be' exempt from the regimented court life in the matter of food and drink, appealing to the "prince of the eunuchs." ; It required considerablegpersuasion for Daniel to obtain permission to con tinue his simple life. Only when Dan iel propose4a(.est'ipf ten days to prove his point -was permission giv en. At the end of the period, Daniel and the two other Hebrew youths who joined him in his request to the king, were found to be in " better physical condition than all the others and upon examination mentally, they were considered "ten times better than all the magicians and enchant ers that were in all, his realm." Live simply! How quaint the idea seems. The trend in America today is definitely away from simple liv ing. One writer has declared how ever, "Only the simple livers are really free: the others are more or lean pnslavpd. What. do we not owe to our parents who have brought us up as'Christian boys and girls? It . is a notable fact that the youngsters who go astray did not pay that respect or give that affcetion and confidence to their parents that they should have given. Children should learn to be-candid with their parents and enjoy a precious relationship with them. THE religious atmosphere of a home is the foundation on which the young generation builds with confidence and purpose. Young people should remember tp have respect for parental authority. Juvenile delinquency clearl demonstrates that those youngsters who have gone astray from the paths of rectitude have side-stepped the teachings of their parents and the admonition to be found in the scriptures. Under no condition com mit an act of disrespect to your parents. Time clearly demonstrates that "Mom and Pop" only want to do that which is best for their children.
