PCDfauSSjiLl Tezciiing Lod In Primeiy Grcdss The citizens of the State, as well as the teachers in the State's schools, believe the teaching load should be reduced to 30 pupils orv fewer, their responses to State Education Com mission questionnaires reveal. Out of a total of nearly 7,500 answers from citizens concerning the size of classes in the primary grades, 66 said that 25 to 29, and 27 said that 30 to 34 pupils constitute a rea sonable teaching load. Of 472 prin cipals who replied to this question 87 were of the opinion that 25 to 29 pupils are enough to assign to a primary grade. Of more' than 3,500 primary teachers who answered this question, 1,366 said the load should be between 25 and 29 pupils, and l,09d placed it from 29 to 31 pupils. When asked what the most desir able teaching load for the grammar grades should be, 41 of nearly 7,000 citizens said 25 to 29 pupils, while 457o thought good teaching could be done with 30 to 34 pupils in a class. Of the principals who gave their opinions, 47 listed 25 to 29 pupils for the grammar grades, while 48 stated that 30 to 84 pupils were not too many to assign to a teacher. More than 3,500 grammar teachers were questioned. Of these 69 said they could do their most effective work if no more than 31 pupils were placed in their charge. The others believed their best work can be done with from 25 to 29 pupils. For the high school, 47 of nearly 6,600 citizens stated that from 25 to 29 pupils are enough to assign to a teacher, while 31 were of the opm ion that 30 to 34 do not constitute too heavy a load. Nearly 400 high school principals answered this question and 49 of them stated that the most effective high school teaching could be done with from 25 to 29 pupils per class, while 33 thought that 30 to 34 pupils could be taught effectively. The reports indicated . wide varia tion of grade levels. For example, 44 primary teachers reported fewer than 20 pupils each enrolled; 1,182 reported from 20 to 31 pupils, 816 from 40 to 49 pupils, and 219 from 60 to 60 pupils. Of nearly 4,000 grammar grade teachers reporting, 64 had fewer' than 20 pupils; 967 had from 29 to 31 enrolled; 1,016 taught from 40 to 49 pupils, and 195 said there were from 50 to 60 pupils in their rooms. rijSu3.il7Ll.r; County Apt Urges ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. "Safety precautions in , swimming or boating may save a life and that life may be your own. Remember, always play safe in water.'? This common-sense advice is suggested by County Agent I. C. Yagel of the State College Extension Service. With the opening of the " water sports season, the National Safety Council makes some positive recom mendations based on research and study into the water safety problem. Swimming is fine exercise for those in - proper pnysical condition, out u you are not feeling well, stay out of the water, especially deep water. Also, take it easy at the beginning of the season until you are m good condition. Wait for a time following meals before entering the water and do not swim if overheated. Take sufficient time to cool off before going in the water even though the temptation may be great. It is advisable to swim only with a good swimmer or life guard. Avoid exerting beyond your strength and never dive into strange water where the depth and condition of the bottom are unknown. If pos- sible, take a few lessons in life sav ingit may prove to be a great ad vantage some day. Mr. Yagel pointed out that one does not need to be a landlubber" with a canoe, rowDoat or outDoard motor. Needless tragedies can be avoided by using good judgment. The National Safety Council recommends the fol lowing safety precautions. Never overload your boat. There may be seats for more people than the boat should carry. Know and heed weather signs and avoid staying out in storms. Always step into the center of boat never jump, and never stand up in a moving boat. Never smoke while fueling. Make sure your motor, is not too powerful for the boat- In case of capsizing, stay alongside the boat and hang on to the side, but don't try to climb in. A boat with air tanks will stay afloat indefinitely and will support several persons. Relax, be calm, signal for help and wait for it to arrive. ' GREAT EQF3 GA'S tl.
