'PAGE TWO
THE FERQUIMAN3 WEEXLY, HERTFORD, N. FUIDAY, JULY SO, 1943."
SUNDAY SCHOOL
LESSON :
(Continued from Pj Seven)
wretched king Jehoiakim, placed on
-the throne by the king of Egypt as
his tributary, seems to have had aH
of the vices of eastern sovereigns.
He was covetous, cruel, . tyrannous,
lawless, heartless and senseless. , He
had neither valor nor goodness and
so little onderstood the forces at work
in his time that he held onto the sup
port Of Egypt ' against the trta
power of Babylon and, of 'coarse,
when Egypt was defeated by Babylon,
Jehoiakim shared, the fate of Egypt,
Judea was overrun, Jerusalem captur
ed and the king bound In chains to be
carried to Babylon.
Jeremiah warned again and again
tfiat the only possible hope for Judah
was to surrender to Babylon. This
message, of course, was very un
popular and, as a result, Jeremiah
wag often severely punished. Jere
miah was forbidden to enter the
temple, so utterly was he in conflict
with the official guardians of the na
tional religion. It was during these
days that Baruch, in dose attendance
upon Jeremiah at all times, dared to
read aloud in the temple the words of
the prophecies which had made his
master so hated. His daring is em
phasized by the fact 'that Baruch
waited for a time when his reading of
Jeremiah's message would have the
largest audience and the widest pub
lic appeal the fast-day, even though
such an act endangered his own life
and safety.
In chapter 32 we read that Jere
miah was finally cast into prison as
a defeatist, but Baruch is still with
him. fearlessly showing his friend
ship when to be a friend of the pro
phet was not only very unpopular, but
also fraught with the danger of be
ing considered an enemy of the state.
- Our last glimpse of this courage
ous man is his being dragged away
into exile by his embittered and de
spairing countrymen because of his
continued loyalty to Jeremiah. Faith
ful to the end, Baruch goes with his
master Into exile in Babylon from
which the prophet did not return.
What did Baruch accomplish
First, he preserved for time and eter
nity the story of Jeremiah's life and
the record of his teaching an im
portant part of the Old Testament
Re helped to make the written word
of God a power by which the great
prophets have multiplied their influ
ence. All the books of the Bible were
written by men like him, inspired by
a profound faith that the word of
God's prophets was a word of saving
grace. Second, his loyalty to his
friend serves as an example to oth
em or tne srreat xrutn. spoaen mj
Jesus, when he said, "Whosoever shall
save his life shall lose it; but whoso
ever shall lose his life for my sake
and the gospel's, the same shall save
it" (Mark 8:36).
SOIL CONSERVATION NOTES
N. W. Chappell, J. L. Lane, H. H.
Butt, Freeman Umphlett, E. T. Kirby,
If. T. Griffin, E. J. Rkidick and Joe
Harrell recently had soil samples tak
en for fertilizer recommendations on
their fields. Soil Conservation Service
technicians working with the Albe
marle Soil Conservation District take
the samples. They are sent to the
testing laboratory of the N. C. State
Department of Agriculture. The lab
oratory finds out the amount of nitro
gen phosphate and potash in the soil.
They send the farmer this information
and advise him how much additional
fertilizer to apply for a certain crop.
Perquimans County farmers are be
coming more interested in better
drainage. A group of farmers own
ing farms in the Lake Section have
requested assistance from the district
to help solve their drainage problem.
Farmers who fertilized and seeded
permanent pastures last fall are Well
satisfied with the amount of grazing
these pastures have furnished this
summer.
Test wells to study the water level
in a field were installed recently in a
field on the J. J. Skinner farm. These
wells were put in as a field test on a
cooperative project sponsored by the
State Experiment Station and the Soil
Conservation Service. The purpose of
this study is to obtain information on
the rate at which water moves down
through different types of soil and
how much under drainage can be ex
pected from open ditches or tile
When all of the field tests are com
pleted it is expected that better in
formation on the spacing of open
ditches in different types of soil will
be available.
L. W. Smith plans to clean out his
lead ditch which drains into the
White Millpond Canal. Soil Conser
vation Service Technicians working
with the Albemarle Soil Conservation
District surveyed the ditch for Mr.
Smith and staked it out to grade.
Frank Skinner recently harvested
his Kentucky-31 Fescue grass seed.
Farmers in the Burnt Mill Creek
section of Perquimans and Chowan
Counties are planning to improve the
drainage on their farms. They are
organizing a Drainage District for
the purpose ,of digging a main ditch
through the Burnt Mill Creek Swamp.
R. M. Dailey, Drainage Engineer
with the Soil Conservation Service,
has completed the survey of the pro
ject and will prepare the plane and
SDecifications for the canals.
