Continuing our study of unheralded j Bible characters, this week we con- j aider Aquila and Priscilla, husband i and wife. Aquila was a Jew, corn m Pontus, who had lived for some time in Italy. When all the Jews living in Rome were ordered to leave the Imperial City, Aquila and his wife, .Priscilla, settled in Corinth and there plied their trade of tent-makers with some degree of success. After a rather disheartening visit to Athens, the Apostle Paul arrived in Corinth and, as the custom was among the early Christians, he imme diately went to the "church" to meet other believers. The "church" at this time was in the hpspitable home of. Aquila and Priscilla and it was there that Paul met this worthy couple. Being a tent-maker himself, Paul stayed on in the home and Joined with them in their work. At that time, every member of a Jewish family, no matter how wealthy 'the family was, was taught a trade at which he could , earn his living. Paul found Aquila . and Priscilla not only fellow crafts men, but also partners in suffering for the cause of Christ. This couple, Aquila and Priscilla, seemed to have been inseparable. Every mention of one includes men tion of the other. Sometimes the name of the husband is given first, while often times the name of the wife comes first. We can judge, then, that they were both zealous in the spread of the news about Christ. While we know little of the back ground of Priscilla, we can conclude, from the passages given for our study, that she was a woman of re finement, of intelligence and of gra cious spirit. Not only did she play a great part in the life of Paul, in providing him with employment and hospitality in their home, they gave of their com panionship and sympathetic under : standing of inestimable comfort to a man who, for the sake of Christ, had suffered so much and had given up the hope of ever having a home of his own in his life. When Paul went to Ephesus, Aquila and Priscilla went with him and there they stayed until he went to Jeru salem and Antioch. Quietly and un obstrusively, while he was away, ' these consecrated workers laid the foundations on which the Apostle was later to build. Paul, in Acts 19:8-41; (Cor. 16:8-9, and II Cor. 1:8-11) tells that this couple risked their lives for his sake. They were willing -to die, ., if need be, for the Gospel's sake. Sr Not only -did Aquila and Priscilla help Paul, they helped another ser vant of God's, Apollos, a brilliant and eloquent preacher, came under their ministry. After hearing Apollos preach, Aquila and Priscilla, while ad mitting that he was "mighty in the Scriptures," realized that there was something missing in his experience, for he preached "only of the baptism of John." Taking Apollos into their home, mm You've met this man be fore ! Remember him? What grand airs he liked to as sume! What vain boasts poured from his lips! He was forever trying to make an impression, but most people saw through his false front. They called him a STUFFED SHIRT! Airs and vanity rarely fool us. We look for the inner qualities of a man's character. Only when those inner qualities are just as fine as the external impres sion he makes only then are we sure we have met a man of the highest mettle. The Church builds char acter Into the life of the individual and of the com munity it pours those mor al and spiritual influences which develop man's innate nobility. Through religious education and the worship of God, the Church points young and old to the high goals and rich resources of Christian living.
