f AGE SEVUa A RELIGIOUS FAMILY . International Sunday School Lesson ' For September 26, 1948 Golden Text: "Ad for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15. Lesson Text: Acts 16:1-5; II Tim othy 1:3-6; 3:14,15: With this lesson, we brine to a ' close the series on "Unheralded Bible past quarter, we have come to know many men and women who made distinct contributions to their day and age and their examples should insnir manv who while thev cannot do things, "can live their best from ! day to day, making the world a better place, for their having passed through it. We do not know when or where Paul first came in contact with- the family we are to discuss in this lesson. It was while he was on his second missionary journey , that he, accompanied by Silas, arrived in Derbe and Lystra. There, as our reference tells us, was a certain dis ciple," named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek. Paul had heard good reports of this young man and need ing another helper in his great work, he invited Timothy to join him' in the dangerous, difficult work of spread ing the gospel. Timothy accepted the invitation and thus began a friendship between , two workers in the Kingdom, one now a rather old man and the other a comparatively . young man. How was it that Timothy, a young man, was prepared for service when the call came? Paul himself tells why, when he declares, "From a babe thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are- able to make thee wise onto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." Oliver Wendell Holmes wisely said, To educate a child we must begin with his grand father." In the case of Timothy, his religious education began with his grandmother. Lois, from her to his mother, Eunice. Timothy received his training in his home and while his grandfather and his father are not mentioned, there evidently was no objection on their part to the re ligious instruction given the young child. The fellowship in a truly religious family is the' best soil possible for the development of the finest traits of character. In the family circle each member learns to consider the interests of the other members, learn ing the habits of thoughtfulness and unselfishness. In a Christian home parents and children appreciate and care for each other, and a strong tradition of love and comradeship is established. Their love for each other naturally is expressed in a mutual love for God and, in, their worship of Him they find a daily .source of strength and joy in family ( living. The faith which sustained Timothy in his hours of trial was largely the consequence of the early teachings of his mother and grandmother, both of-whom were believers in Jesus Christ. As a young child (babe) he was taught the scriptures and the truthn ho )tArnaA ffion' tiavai Aeinart. frH frAm turn Miwf aitiinoVivt mua 1 . A.waaa wwdv . The picture emphasizes the wisdom they have shown in adding to their secular training a study of the Scriptures as a guide for liv ing. Spiritual development will strengthen their lives in whatever spheres their lots may be cast. Friendships formed in religious associations are usually more de pendable and far more helpful than those picked up in question able places of amusement. Spread out before these youthful students is a wonderful and alluring future. They possess youth, intelligence, vision and hope and to these they may add faith, love and achievement which is the full realization of life. All these and more will be theirs if they follow the teachings of the Scriptures in building their careers. The churches of this community seek to direct the footsteps of our youth into paths of usefullness and happy living. BETHLEHEM CHRISTIAN CHURCH W. H.
