Schools Need Federal Aid We think the people of the United States ere in general agreement that the educational program of the na tion is sagging far behknlthe needs of the children of this country. The question that presents itself involves a method of financing an ex pansion of the educational plant of the nation. Obviously, the states, in most cases, are without adequate funds to finance an adequate school building program and an adequate Bcale of compensation to secure and retain competent teachers. It has been . axiomatic for many iyears that the Federal Government, with its great taxing powers, man ages to get the money for what it wants. Obviously, the states cannot, or do not, levy the taxes to put them in the same healthy condition. For this reason, many people have concluded that the Federal Govern ment must devise some method of ex tending financial assistance to the schools and that it must be based upon the need of the various states for educational purposes. Of course, the prime consideration is the number of pupils going to school. While the Government of the Unit ed States has been interested in many things on the basis of the national welfare,' for some reason there has been some reluctance to permit the Federal Government to finance educa tion. Despite the needs, prominent education officials have feared that bureaucracy would be established in Washington and that the grants of money would be accompanied by a rigorous regimentation of the educa tional processes throughout the na tion. This danger, which admittedly ex ists, can be obviated by the terms of legislation providing for Federal as sistance. The prospect that the Federal Gov ernment will extend liberal financial assistance to the public schools of the nation calls to mind the dire ex tremity in which many privately-own' ed or religiously-supported schools and colleges find themselves. It' is difficult for these institutions of learn ing to keep up with the standards set by schools supported by public funds. Nevertheless, the Government, has no right to curtail the fulfillment of its duty because of the inability of pri vate or church-directed schools to keep up with the pace. The mem bers of the churches, for example, which operate in the field of educa tion, must, if they want the work to continue!, support their schools and colleges. that death-lurks around the corner, but may be avoided by careful AriV' U Lid Doty By Dr. Sophia Lose Four Billion Insects inflict damage to the crops of the United States that cost grow ers about $4,000,000,000 a year, ac cording to experts of the Department of Agriculture, despite the existence of improved and highly effective in secticides. This is a surprising figure and seemingly large enough to spur all growers of crops to use the spray gun incessantly. Progress is being made in the con trol of insects, including those that carry disease and those that devour plants and their fruity Gradually the crop growers are Decommg convinced that greater profits from growing things comes to those who take ad vantage of what modern science has done to make possible the protection of crops from insects of all kinds. THE SKIN ."Please tell me how to improve my looks. I am just starting in at col lege this year. My skin is muddy and full of freckles and blackheads. I do want to look my best, but I don't know how to go about it," so writes a distressed damsel. : , Poor little maiden; no wonder that she is worried, for the condition which she describes places her at a disad vantage socially, and makes her unhappy. First, you must remember that there is no royal road to beauty, no magic formulas that are put up in attractive jars that will transform the ugly duckling into a fairy prin cess of encnanting loveliness over night. There are many factors that enter into the creation of a beautiful complexion. Rational living is the greatest aid to beauty and no one who is sickly can possess the radiant charm that good health carries with it. It is not difficult to keep well, by continuing the habit of right living. It is a hard tedious job to restore the health once it has been damaged. All beauty has its inception in a healthy body and contented mind. Blackheads are collections of grease and dirt which clog the pores of the skin. They are usually due to im proper diet and failure to keep 'the skin clean. Heavy foods, such as large amounts of greasy fried meats, sugars, candies, pastry and meals of that kind, invite a sluggish liver and poor circulation, with its accompany ing muddy, oily, 'blackhead choked skin. Most articles that are written by so-called beauty specialists advise steaming the face. Steaming the face will ruin any complexion if pe raised in long enough. The hot steam de stroys the natural oils that nature gave us as a protection and will cause the skin to crinkle, wrinkle and yellow. Remember that blackheads are composed of grease and dirt which have hardened in the pores. If the condition is very bad, wring cloths tiut of hot water and apply to your face, renewing them as fast as they cool. This softens the cuticle. Take a crash wash cloth, ivory soap, or one that is equally as bland, and scrub your face in luke warm water, using rotary movements. A complexion brush tjiat is not injured by water is better than the cloth, for the fine bristles are more effective in cleansing the pores. After the face has been thoroughly gone over, and is glowing from the massage, of the brush, then rinse thoroughly in cold water. This acts as a tonic to the skin. Dry gently and well, then apply your astringent or some good lotion or cream. If you eat properly, drink plenty of water and see that the colon empties itself thoroughly each day, the above treatment, if persisted in, .will cause your blackheads to disappear. Highway Tragedy The death of six high school stu dents in Minnesota, which occurred in an automobile accident while they were returning from a football game, is a tragedy that heavily emphasizes the danger that besets those who travel the highways. Cold statistics tell us that nearly one hundred Americans die in traffic accidents every day of the year. Such figures are theoretical things, but. the bodies of six young people lying by the roadside present a picture that witnesses will not forget . There is nothing to be gained by preaching a sermon to young people about the dangers of automobile driv- Ivisr TIia rtnu Imwhi MAntfl 'V. li . rected to adults. : An of us need to remember, when we take the wheel, 1.
