SUNDAY SCHOOL .LESSON HISTORY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT International Sunday School Lesson For October 24 -. "... V Golden Text: "Blessed is the na tion whose God is the Lord." Psalm 33:12. Lesson Text: 6, 9-11. I Kings 4:21-28; 11: f I Of the thirty-nine Books of the Old ! TflRtflmeHt. fllmnat half nr Dovonfaon ! are clear histories- and of the twenty seven Books in the New Testament, five are histories. In addition to these, there are many other Books in both the Old and New Testaments' which, although r.ot classed as his-1 toncal Books, contain pronounced his torical elements. The history of the Old Testament begins back before there was any written history, and continues down to a few centuries befdre the coming of Christ. We have no accurate dates in connection with this history, as we have in secular, history, but it is re markable that the Old Testament fur nishes a story His story of God's dealing with his creation. Of course, Hebrew , history begins with Abraham, of whom God said, "I will make of thee a great nation and I will bless thee and make thy name great (Gen. 12:2). We can follow Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, the Judges, Samuel, Saul, David. Solomon and the prophets, tracing a people who are being form ed and fashioned into a nation, but who have not yet found unity or power. Beginning as a migrant peo ple, wandering in the wilderness, they supplanted the Ganaanites and settled , in the land of Canaan, now known to all the world as Palestine or the Holy Land. The natives gave these new people the name "Hebrew," meaning "one who has come from beyond" or "one who has crossed over." The He brews are known to us as Jews, a word which is frequently found in the New Testament. It comes from the word Judah, as they were inhabitants of Judah, but the name favored by the people themselves was "Israelites" or "Israel." Hugh Thomson Kerr points out that "in a most interesting book, Our Heredity from God, the author argues that God has in the course of the world's history' turned a nVw page every five hundred years. His analy sis is interesting. He begins back in 2,000 B. C. and points out that at the time Abraham was journeying from the land of his father, the first path finder of faith, looking for a city that had foundations whose builder and maker is God; and at the same time India was awakened by the religious message of Brahmanism. "Five hundred years went by and in 1500 B. C. God turned another page of history and we see Moses, the great emancipator, guiding the lead ers of the world out of Egyptian slav ery; and at the same time Manu was promulgating his laws for Southern Asia. "Five hundred years again pass and about 100 B. C. another page ef his tory is turned and David sits upon the throne of Israel in his glory singing his immortal Psalms, and Homer at (Concluded on Page Two) ? f This picture portrays a sight that was common a few generations ago. . The tallow candle was an essential commodity In nearly every home, and much of the world's activity was carried on by its flickering beams. From the earliest days, man has sought means of lighting his darkness. In this quest, he has pro gressed from the burning of sticks and candles to the use of the gas burner and electricity. Thus man has robbed the night of its terrors, and has used the dark hours to serve his own1 purposes. He does not have to cower in a cave or den as many wild animals do. With light, he can work, study, travel, play, or be entertained. Spiritual darkness is more to be feared and shunned than the darkness of night. Man needs a light within to guide his heart and mind as he moves onward through life. God is that light, and the Church and' the Bible are the sources from which it shines. THE CHURCH FOR AU . . .
