Hold Carnival Student of Chowan High School will hold a' Halloween, Carnival at the school building Friday, October 29 beginning at 7:30 o'clock, it was announced today. ' A king and queen will be selected from the grammar school grades and the high school' prizes will be award ed for the best costumes. 1 The committee in charge of ar rangements plan a real Hallowe'en party which promises plenty of en tertainment for grown-ups as well as children and the public is invited to attend. Hertford Bearsln Scoreless Tie Friday The 1948 edition of the Hertford Bears football team was held score less in a bitterly fought contest with the Edenton High School squad on Friday, October 22. Both teams threatened time , and again to score, but the opposing lines rose to the oc casions as they occurred. Satterfield, Sutton and Wilkins were outstanding for the Bears, while Spence and Dud ley sparked the Edenton warriors. SURPRISE PARTY I Friday night at the home Of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Mathews, Mrs. Winston Lane and Mrs. Howard Mat hews were joint '..hostesses at a sur prise party for Mrs. Sidney Layden and Mrs. J. B. Basnight,. - who have pnmnleted ten' years of : oerfect at tendance to the meetings of the Bur gess Home Demonstration Club. The dining room and living room were tastefully decoratea wua autumn leaves. The dining table was covered with a huge three tiercake decorat ed with candles and tiny wreaths of crreen with vellow flowers which car ried out the club colors. The cake rested on a bed of autumn" leaves and was flanked on either side by tall yellow tapers set in chrystal candle holders. After jolly games and contests the euests were invited into the dining room and the guests of honor lighted the candles and opened and acknowl edged the many gifts they were pre sented by their fellow club members. They then blew out the candles and each made a wish for the future. They cut the cake and it was serv ed with nuts, mints and punch by the hostesses. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Layden, Mrs. J. B. Bawight, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Ayscue, Mr. and Mr Howard Mathews. Mr. and Mrs. Winston Lane, Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Mathews, Mr. and Mrs.- Ernest Long, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Whidbee, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Copeland, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Long, Mrs. Howard, Shean, Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Perry, Mrs, Mary Keaton, Mrs. Walton Lane and Mrs. V. L. Proctor. MR. School had its study meeting' Thursday night, October 14, at the home of Mrs. Moody Harrell, with Mrs. Harrel as leader. Those taking part on the program were Mrs. ' Frank "Bray, Mrs. Eddie Harrell, Mrs. A. R. Cooke and Mrs. Wallie Knight. HELEN GAITHER CLUB NEWS The Helen Gaither Club met Thursday : evening, .. October 21st at 8 o'clock at the Agriculture Building with tors. E. Y. Berry as hostess. The meeting was opened by sing ing "America", after which the col lect was repeated ' in unison. The Devotional, was given by Mrs. John Corprew, . Jr., which was followed by the roll call and the reading of the minutes of the last meeting. Mrs. J. P. Chesson, Sr., discussed briefly the "News Letter". -Miss Braswell gave an interesting demonstration on "Know Your Shrubbery" with an oral quiz after ward on the different shrubs shown. The meetine was dismissed by singing "Is Everybody Happy?" During the receration penod Mrs. J.
