LESS5II The Disciplines Of Disdpleship (Temperance) v International Sunday School Lesson Tor April 24, 1949 Memory Selection: "Whoever does . not bear his own. cross and come af ter me, cannot he my discpile." Luke 14:27. ' Lesson Text: Luke 12:16-21; i 14:27-33 While Jesus did not condemn the possession of wealth in itself, he often warned of the danger connect ed with over-emphasis of the value, of wealth to the individual. The weal thy landowner of the parable was engaged in an honorable business.. He was exposed to few temptations. He was not a monster in character, but a man whose leading trait has been duplicated a million times over. Apparently, he was talented and economical, industrious- and prudent, honest and moral in all his dealings. Yet he climbed the sweaty slope of toil to the summit of worldly success only to find himself on the edge of a yawning abyss. He had laid his plans without God. He had a false sense of values. He measured suc cess by broad fields and full barns. James Orr declares that "he made three mistakes: he mistook his body for his soul; he mistook time for eternity; and he mistook himself for God, the Ruler of all destinies." . From a worldly standpoint, this farmer was a real success. Yet sue cess is a term of variable meaning and application. One can be sue cessful without having much money or worldly acclaim. Uo not misun derstand us. It is right to accumu late and it is wrong to be lazy and thriftless. But we must lay up in a right way the right things in the right place. This man was rich in material wealth but Jesus intimates that he was not "rich toward God". Just what does "rich toward God" mean? God does not need our riches for himself but we need to be rich to ward him by using our riches for his glory. That means that our money getting should be more for others than for ourselves. There are many in the world today who seem to have the talent for making money and many of thesftjuse a large jontiojv of the wealth thus attained for the good, of others. Then, in our text from Luke 14, Jesus pointed out to his disciples the ,real cost of djscipleship. He points out that the discipline is very severe and the cost is very high. Those who would follow him should realize that they must he prepared to exercise the most severe Belf-dis-cipline, for the goal of his disciples was no ordinary goal, hut the goal of the upward calling of God in Christ Jesus. ' . . . . In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus speaks of the two ways that one may travel through lifea, strait gate and a nar row way that leads to life, but few people find it; and a wide gate and a broad way that lead to destruction, and many people travel it. He thus declares, that the Chirstian pathway is narrow. There are some things that a Christian must deprive himself of in (Concluded on Page Two) "if 'i ft TOKTHt :0 i ITAMILY ffl I ''V?" Here is a team that is hard to beat a family whose members work together and" play together and are bound by & common tie of love and mutual interests. Such families are the hope of the world. People do not have to be clannish or unsocial to enjoy such home life. They may have Interests, associations, and pleasures outside, but their domi nant interest will be in the home and the family circle. . Fortunate indeed are the children whose lots are cast in such a home. For parents who are motivated to build such homes are not apt to neglect the moral and spiritual values which make life strong and beautiful. They turn naturally to the Church and the inspiration of Jhe HolyScriptures for guidance, knowing that these will endure though everything else may fail. - Children reared in such homes become good citizens and useful members of society.
