PAGE FOUR THE PERQUIMANS V Graham Opposed To Road Bond Issue ' , (Continued fronv Page One) ruary 1 after serving during the ad ministration of Governor R. Gregg Cherry. He has opposed the Scott road plan ever since the preesnt Gov ernor, announced it on the ground that it is "unwarranted and ecoomically unsound." ' "I shall caat my vote f of tha schoo! building bondh in Saturday's elec tion, but I think it is unfair for pro ponents of the road bonds to tie their little red wagon to the school hnnHa." Graham added as he an nounced his support of the $25,000,000 bond issue for construction and re pair of school buildings. After necessary deductions or ad ministrative expense, debt service on 4oiul issues floaed for Toad purposes from 1921 to 1931. and for other ex penses borne by the State highway fund, Graham asserted that during the Cherry administration approxi mately $191,000,000 ' was spent for construction . and maintenance of the State's primary and secondary roads, with emphasis placed on the paving and improving, of -secondary roads. During : the calendar year 1948, he added, 3,356 miles of roads were pav ed and of these 2,524 miles were rural roads. ' .'" Provided there, is no "serious - re cession," Graham predicted the pres ent administration will have approxi mately $260,000,000 available for ac tual road work after necessary de ductions are made for administrative, debt service and other items, or "just about -70,000,000 more than was available for actual road work during the Cherry administration."
