FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1950 Truman Will Run In 1952 From now until 1952, there will be periodical efforts on the part of re porters and political commentators to get a reply from President Truman aa to whether he will be a candidate for re-election in 1952. The net result of the questioning, of comae, will be exactly nothing. The President, aa a good politician, will not disclose his hand this early in the game. This will not deter the ambiti ous reporters from seeking to make some copy, by discussing the question, backward and forward, at periodic in tervals between now and the early part of 1952. The President may not be willing to commit himself but there is noth ing in evidence to suggest that he does not intend to run again in 1952. In fact, there is every reason to jbelieve that Mr. Truman, following Ms sur prise victory of 1948, likes the Job of being President and will chart his course on the well-known, slogan, "Few' die and none resign" from pub lic office. Over-Estimating The Reds J. Edgar Hoover, head of the Fed eral Bureau of Investigation, has ap pealed to ixmgress to add .700 persons to his staff, half for investigative work and the other half for clerical work. In view of the necessity to protect, if possible, the atomic and hydrogen secrets of the nation, the FBI prob ably needs additional men unless it can eliminate some of the investiga tive work now being carried on. In connection with his successful appeal to a Senate group, Mr. Hoover reported that there are 54,000 card holding members of the Communist Party m the United States. He esti mated that them ar mmrtilv 4m times that number of fellow-travelers, or Communist sympathisers. We do not know bow the FBI chief arrived at the figure of 64,000 Communists but we have no- idea, that his esti mate as to "fellow-travelers" is ac curate, :M V-V;': There has been a tendency in the United States to call any liberal a "fellow-traveler" and to use the term as an epithet, applicable to one's op ponent, whether the argument dealt with political, social or religious mat ters. If everybody to whom the epi thet has been applied in the past few years is to be considered a "fellow- traveler," there must be at least fifty million in the country.
