It we intelligently meet 1 the issue there, is the hopeful prospect - that the free nations of the earth will prove so "strong that no totalitarian regime, whatever it ideology, will be able to overaome us or, an the long over-persuade the other peoples ie earth.:') - ' , ran, of the STRENGTH DTGERMANY?; ' The United States Army and Air Force in Germany are preparing plans that call for five-year occupation of that country but whether this is a preliminary survey or the indication of a determined : pokey is uncertain. Our ; ground and. air forces have initiated a construction program in uermany that indicates an intention to keep armed forces in that country lor sometime. Apparently, it is deern ed essential to. maintain a symbol of American power in Germany in order to give European peoples 'assurance of our interest in 'their 'fat? and to jerve as a warning to Soviet Russia that the United States,- in. fact, is a force to be reckoned with in any de cisions that the Kremlin may take concerning European affairs. . The people of the United States are only beginning to recognize the serious mistake made by this country when the ' German forces surrendered in 1945. At that time the home front was almost fanatical in its demand that the soldiers' come home, little un derstanding the vital importance of maintaining strong American forces in Germany. Practically everybody recognizes that the precipitant demo bilization of American troops was a serious mistake and that the course of affairs in Eurone might have been different if this country had main tained a considerable army in Ger many for two or three years after the surrender of the Nazi forces. 'For some strange reason, our peo ple got the impression that the World was saved when the German army collapsed. We looked at the war in I the same manner that we regarded an I athletic contest. We overlooked the necessity of holding . a strong hand connection with negotiations and PAGE NINE IS SCREEN TIME Keep Out Spring and Summertime pests By Installing Scr e e n s NOW Check your screen windows and doors. HOW MANY COMMUNISTS IN THE WORLD? 'Recent reports in the Soviet press, according to Harry Schwartz in the New. York Times, claim that there are between 25,000 and 26,000 Communists; in the World." v . 1 The party in the Soviet Union is, the largest, with - approximately ' 7, 000,000 members. Next comes China, with an estimated 4,000,000 members, representing an increase of 1,000,000 111 the past year. The largest Communistic group in Europe is claimed in Italy,' where there are' an estimated 2,532,000 ad herents. Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania are put down for 2,300,000, 1,360,000 and 1,000,000 respectively. The figures printed in Moscow re flect important losses in some Eu ropean countries. In France only 800,000 members are claimed as against 1,300,000 in 1947. In Hungary the estimate is down to 950,000 from 1,150,000. Altogether the Communists outside of Russia are estimated as about the same figure as 1949, appar ently showing that gains in China about balanced the losses from resig nation or purges in European countries.
