Poppy Sales May 27 "
L (Making memorial poppies to lye
worn in honor, of war dead on Poppy
Day, May 27, is providing employ-
ment for thousands of disabled veter
ans in hospitals throughput the
country, according to Mrs. Lessie'E.
White, Poppy Day chairman for the
Hertford unit of the American Legion
Auxiliary.
The work not only enables the vet
erans to 'earn much needed money hut
' also is valuable as occupational ther
aphy. '
Poppies will be sold on the streets
of Hertford ;,. and . throughout the
county by volunteer workers from
the Auxiliary and Girl Scouts, Mrs.
White said. Contributions received
for the. little red memorial flowers
will go entirely into the rehabilitation
and child welfare funds of the Legion
and Auxiliary.

The family of Mrs. R. L, Spivey,
Sr., held a family reunion at her
home near New Hope Sunday.
Dinner was served picriicstyle on
the lawn.

Elizabeth City, Mr. and Mrs. W. B.
Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Babbie Clark

New officers for the Hertford Parent-Teachers
Association, for the
year 1950-51, were installed at the
meeting of the Association held last
Thursday night. Installed as presi
dent was Mrs. W. C. Cherry, vice
president, Mrs. James Leete; secre
tary, Mrs. Silas Whedbee, and treas
urer, Mrs. Joe Towe. The installation
was directed by Mrs. Charles E. John
son, who presided over the meeting in
the absence of Mrs. D. M. Jackson,
out-going president.
During the business session of the
various 'committees and Miss Thelma
Elliott, principal, issued a statement
as to the accomplishments of the
Health Department, as to the eye, ear
and throat f" tests ' conducted at the

. A tribute was paid to the out-going
president, Mrs. D. M. Jackson and
the meeting was then turned over to
Mrs. Clarence Dail, chairman of the
program. - Mrs. Carson Howell gave
the devotional and a number of musi
cal numbers were presented by Mrs.
Leroy Dail, Mn. Melvin Eure, James
Umphlett and Mollie Lu Yeates, ac
companied at the piano by Mrs. J. D.
Yeates. ...
It was announced that the four
troop flags will be presented the Girl
Scouta before the close of the present
school term.

Byerley and prayer by Mrs. Reuben
Stallings made up the devotional.
Hymn, "Oh, Zion Haste," was sung.
The program was given in the form
of a conversation entitled1, "Radio In
(Missions," by Mrs. William Stallings,
Mrs. J. B. Basnight, Mrs. Howard
Shean and Mrs. J. B. Perry. Duet:
"Help Somebody Today," by Mrs.
Sidney Layden and Mrs. J. B. Perry.
The meeting closed by singing, "Bless
ed Be the Tie That Binds."
