Mansfield July 2Mug4Al,l5septl " Union Of Free Peoples A resolution, now under considera tion by the Congress of the United States, provides that the President of the United States invite the de mocracies that sponsor the North At lantic Treaty to name delegates, to meet this year "to explore how far their peoples, and the peoples of such other democracies as the convention may invite to send delegates, can sup ply among them within the frame work of the United Nations, the prin ciple of free federal union." It might be a good idea for the aders of the Perquimans Weekly to know something about this resolution. It is sponsored by the Atlantic Union Committee, headed by former Justice Owen J. Roberts, of the U. S. Supreme Court, assisted by an outstanding group of eminent Americans, including Clarenoe Streit, author of "Union Now," which stated some years ago, the principles upon which a free feder al union should be formulated. The reader should understand that the proposal does not include all the nations of the world. It would invite the" law-abiding, peace-loving nations, whose peoples seem to believe in the same fundamental things. The United States, the British Commonwealth, the Scandinavian countries, Belgium, (Hol land, (France and Switzerland com prise those embraced in the invitation. In these countries there is a free press, free speech, free assembly and freedom to own property. The govern ments have been elected by the free vote of their peoples. Individual rights are respected and protected. There are some who advocate a union of all the nations of the earth, but the most practical scheme seems to be a beginning confined to the At lantic democracies. These figures as to should not lead anyone to believe that the union of the democracies would be weak and impotent They control over eighty per cent of the world's industrial and productive power. United, they would possess probably the strongest' power ever seen in the world and no aggressors or combina tion of aggressors would likely court disaster by Inviting a conflict with a union representing and protecting the rights and liberties of free peoples. In view of the fact that the people of this country are conscious of a dangerous situation in world affairs, with Soviet Union in possession of the atomic bomb . and participating in something like an arms race with the United States, it would seem to be an intelligent move to bring about a union of democratic peoples before the outbreak of another war. .-r .'; If these free nations attempt to stand apart from each other, they will invite a future aggressor to 'follow the tactics of a late enemy, who pick ed them off, "one by one.? , Only ia an efficiently working union can the strength of the democracies be com-, bined and utilized to give reasonable assurance for the safety of alL' There are other advantages to be gained through a federation of free peoples.
