An Even Break
Perquimans County children are
getting at least an average break on
activities planned by adults to produce
a better "next generation" it was re
vealed here last Friday when repre
sentatives of many agencies met to
discuss local plans pertaining to the
White House Conference on Children
and Youth.
While this county is without an
overall planning board, or organiation
set up for the purpose of directing
youth activities, and that without
doubt is regrettable, reports made at
the county conference showed that we
do have a number of individual or
ganizations which devote time and ef
fort toward giving children training
for future responsibilities, and at the
same time provide for wholesome
growth.
Outstanding reports on youth work
were made : by representatives of the
County 4-H Clubs, the Eed Cross,
Welfare Department, and groups spon
soring Boy and Girl Scouts. Added
to these are individual churches which
carry out youth programs for children
in various communities of the county.
Revealing was a report by the Su
perintendent of Welfare concerning
juvenile delinquents in this county.
This report showed only three cases
during the past year, which is a far
better record than most communities
have; and it might be reported that
the three casese here were hre suf
ficient attention to correct the situa-tions-'existiiieV
:Pf ' ''It
A Common thought is that little is
done, especially in small communities,
for the good of our children, but,, with
reports such as were made here last
week, we believe this community can
justly be proud . of the record and
take heart to provide even greater
advantages for the youth of our coun
ty. - ' v I . '
Cases In Point
The United States Government, in
its handling of foreign affair throws
the weight of this country on the side
of the free nations but, nevertheless,
exhibits an independence in action
that of ten disturbs and alarms Its a
sociates.
Our friends in other countries do not
understand the workings of American
politics nor the concessions that Con
gress often makes to placate pressure
groups. They fail to understand that
these political acts, while inconsistent
with established foreign policy, do not
of themselves inddicate any weaken
ing on the part of the government it
self. ' . . "Xr-V;;-,,:
Recently, the United States Senate
voted for a compulsory loan of $100,
000,000 to Generalissimo Franco in
Spain. This of course, is expected to
bring some votes to the Democratic
Party and is considered politically a
"good thing." r
The action of the Senate, which may
be followed in the (House overlooks
the very definite decision of Western
European nations that they want to
have nothing to do with General Fran
co. Our action, if it becomes final,
will be misunderstood by millions of
people in the free nations of Western
Europe. , .', .,.;
Somewhat along the v same line is
the determination of the United
States to use a naval force to prevent
an invasion of the island of Formosa.
While the purpose, of the blockade is
to neutralize the war between the Chi
nese factions, the likely prospect is
that the Communist-dominated gov
ernment in China will launch its in
vasion of Formosa. This will bring
about a clash between American naval
forces and Communists and might
even develop Into a war. i If this oc
curs there is also the possibilitv that
Chinese forces might' move to the as
sistance of the North Koreans in ex
pelling the westerners from Korea, , i
The action of the United States
Government ; was taken despite the
fact that it Is hot supported by our
Asiatic allies nor, for, that matter,
the European countries which have a
deficite interest in the far East, The
situation has not been Improved by the
recent, visit of General .MacArthur' to
Generalissimo and Mme.Ch.iang , Kai
shek nor the effects been helped by
the harried trip of Averill Harriman
to the Far East -
