They man 2 pieces of fire fighting equip! ment, the big Ford fire truck and a Chrysler Marine auxiliary ; pumping Let us, look back through the yean and remember some or the major fires in Hertford, (these accounts are strict ly from memory being that no written records are available for authentic in formation, accurate causes and ac counts of the fires). a In 1916 a lire broke out in the attic of the' Whedbee home on Church Street, present location of the J. E. Newby home..' The volunteer firemen, with 'the aid of .the neighbors re moved all the furniture and-household belongings with the , exception1 of one built-in wardrobe' and a few terns in the attic, before the house was con Burned in flames.: It was this fire that Captain C. ;Sft 'Sumner picked up a Bob Roy coal stove and personally took it out of -the house. It was also reported that the people present cut the kitchen away from the house and moved it back to keep it from being destroyed by the fire. - A few years later seven houses burned down in row on King Street near : the Perquimans High School. With the help of a strong wind, the flames jumped from one house to the other until seven, complete losses oc curred. Then in 1924 the colonial mansion on the Gaither Plantation in West Hertford burned to the ground. In 1925, , perhaps, one of the longest fought fires in. Hertford, Brousrhton (Bros. 2nd story building caught- fire. A few years previous,' a big store lo- cated where the State Theatre is now located, burned. A man and his wife pet rabbit jumping on the bed. This smau animal saved tneir lives by tms action. , In .1927 the first fire truck; for Hertford was purchased. ' H: C. Stokes was chaief of the fire ' department at this time. A few years later, the big (Eastern Peanut Mill qn Grubb Street burned to the ground. Many eye wit-' nesses have said this to be the hot test fire,- ever seen in Hertford. In the years to folIowV there were many other costly fires. Dunne the past 10 years we can remember five""deaths attributed to fires. Two deaths -resulted in the fire at J. C Elaiiduird Cou, to Ju!y, 1943. A good number of people were injured and many were saved throush the heroic effort of .Volunteer 'Fire man ihiu of owier wnp servea as an- man Cre net; He caught people as they jumped out of the second story window. . Fireman. Fowler suffered a broken arm in" catching the victims. A thick, black cloud of smoke , cov ered the whole, down-town area. .The Hertford IFire . Department, with the aid of the Navy fire department of Harvey Foint lAlr Station; and the Elizabeth City department brought the fire, under control after a long and sustained fight. 'y:.r In 1947 a colored woman, Maria Everett, was burned to death after her clothes caught fire. Then last October 22, 1949, another tragic fire in Hertford, resulting from an over turned oil lamp, burned W. H. Curtis to death and injured Mrs. W. H. Cur tis, with Mrs. Curtis dying three days later. Heroic attempt to rescue Mr. Curtis and to keep Mrs. Curtis from going back into the fire to find her husband were made by Kermit Mizelle, Robert Nixon and Louis Taylor. J On tiie morning of Thanksgiving Day, . 1949,. a house at 86 Market Street was completely destroyed but, through the swift action , on the part of the Hertford Volunteer Fire De partment, a" number Of surrounding houses were saved. This action brought many favorable comments from other departments and insurance companies as to the matter in which the Hertford Department cut down the possible losses that could have occurred. The fire losses in Hertford have been comparably small thus en abling Hertford to have a low fire insurance rate on building and pro perty. '.. The citizens of Hertford should be thankful and very appreciative of this small fire loss record. ' There are probably a great num ber of fires and instances that were omitted in this story that you may recall-but due to being without writ ten records this story can not be too accurate. This article was written with one objective in mind and that is to en lighten some of these side walk fire chiefs who criticize instead of apolo gizing for getting in the way of the fire truck and volunteer firemen when v "TESJa VyWrJ What MdtiftA i Mvi ( "4 wwH ,flhy4l lmq niqhtic-sowhcnli ONLY MODERN DRIVE-IN OF THE ALBEMARLE 1' -V " HI : WAY 17 DSIVE-IN TIIEATBE : Vt Mile North of Edenton,.N.
