State Cotton Growers
Warned To Save Seed
J. A. Shanklin, cotton specialist for
the State College Extension Service,
warns cotton growers in North Caro
lina to make provisions for saving
their own sed from the 1960 crop or
face a critical shortage of seed next
spring. J-
The seed shortage extends through
out the Cotton -Belt, according to
snankiin, and win prevent areas
which formerly supplied surplus seed
from doing so next spring.
The State College specialist further
estimates that about one-fourth of all
the seed produced in the State this
year will be ' needed to plant next
year's crop. i" ' i
Not much more than 6 per cent of
the seed produced is ordinarily need
ed for the next years crop in worth
Carolina. However, the State is pro
ducing only 660,000 acres of cotton
this year, as compared with a goal of
