government is to succeed permanent
ly, it must rest, fundamentally, upon
the belief that the average voter will
be moved by sound, honest motives in
casting hiaoallot. Are our young peo
ple being impressed with this truth T
Young people who aspire to public
office some day should understand
that public officials represent the peo
ple, that their deeds are supposed to
be for the interest of the people and
that .their constant endeavor should be
to serve the public interest as dis
tinguished from their own, or a group,
interest.
The United States, in its effort to
help other peoples, has demonstrated
the most amazing generosity to be
found in all history.
The race will be intelligent when a
smart student can expect one-tentti of
the education that is deve'oped for s
good halfback.
There is no reason why individuals
should pay heavier taxes that does not
make it reasonable for corporate en
terprise to pay t. t.
We are' a bit wary of the public
character who seeks td star up distrust
between farmers and laborers; these
groups should stand together.
Man has developed some wonderful
machines but the insects, birds and
animals, in. general, seem to get along
with what nature gave them.

EPWORTH W. S. C. S.
In 1933,;f the Government of ,: the
United States began its farm price
support program. There have been
many statements 'made as. to ths
great cost of this "subsidy" to farm
ers but, as a matter of fact, the pro
gram has cost the Government very
little money.
Figures released by the Department
of Agriculture show that the actual
ennt has been 4S17.614.000, or an
averaee of only 31,400,000 a year.
Besides this amount, already written
ff m a loss, the Government has
$4,039,477,000 tied up in loans, inven
tories and crop purchase contracts. A
reserve, to meet possible losses from
these "investments," is $20,724,000.
In looking over the record of six
teen years, one should not lose sight
of the fact that the bill for farm iprice
supports has increased in the past
few years. Iw 1947, for example, the
net loss was $71,895,000. . In the
previous five years, the average was
$25,118,000 annually. In 1948 and
1949, however, 'the losses were $125,
357,000 and $254,762,000, respectively.
It might be well to determine just
how the Government lost their money,
or, at least, the crops that have been
the source of losses. Potatoes, sup
ported since 1933, account for a loss of
$366,533,000. Because of this fact,
many Congressmen, interested in pro
tecting public confidence ih the price
support plan, have urged the adoption
nt some new method in connection
with .potatoes.
The Government has lost $90,953,-
000 on wool, lS01,4l27,OOO on peanuts,
$48,833,000 on corn, $4376,000 on
wheat and $41,122,000 on eggs. The
record is not one altogether of losses,
however, because the Government has
nefttMl a. nrofit of $236,697,000 in
supporting the price of domestic cot
ton.
To understand the loss sustained
in the support of potato prices, one
should note that in the fiscal year
1949, the Government lost $203,88,7,
000 on potatoes and (ess than $14,000,
000 on other crops under support.
However, the support level on potatoes
has been lowered and the loss, dur
ing the first nine mortths of the cur
rent fiscal year, was only $27,522,000.
The W. S. C. S. of Winfall M. E.

tion of the lesson. Airs. J. Van Roach

ing talk on what health centers are

Audrey Umphlette.
Mrs. J. L. DeLaney gave the Spirit
ual Life on Thanksgiving. The meet

were thirteen members present, and

Elizabeth City, Mrs! J.' C. Chaff in

Something To Teach
Young People
We are thoroughly convinced that
the young people of Perquimans Coun
ty should be taught the fundamental
principles of their government. No
chance should 'be taken that they grow
ud without learning to appreciate the
vital factors which formed the basis
of this Union.
We are somewhat afraid that native
Americans take this for granted. Be
cause they have been satisfied with
their overnment, and because they
understand the theories of our gov
ernmental system, they just suppose
that all youngsters will, somehow, in
herit a reverence for, and an under
standing of popular government as it
was planned' for this country-
The duties of man or a woman as
a Voter should be carefully impressed
upon all. Tod often there .is a ten
dency on the part of aH of us to vote
