The funds raised through this cam paign are used to aid in fighting tu berculosis, nvhich is still one of our worst diseases. Much progress haj been made in combatting TB, and funds you contribute this year will go a long way. in helping tp wipe out this killer. ," ISend in your contribution today and join your neighbors in the effort to stamp out tuberculosis. A Safety Measure Installation of a traffic light at Church and KJrubb streets in Hert ford last week, in our opinion, will solve a safety problem of long stand ing, and we hope will meet with ap proval of local residents to the extent there will be no complaints for re . BUHVlL In . smaller towns there is often a desire on the part of motorisits not to be hindered by such things as traffic lights; many complain there is no need for traffic control and controls work only to slow the flow of traffic. t We believe the situation to be the opposite insofar as Hertford is con cerned. With most of our streets be ing narrow, and carrying a heavy traf fic load almost constantly, we are of the opinion, for safety of pedestrians and motorists as well, that the town should take every step in providing sufficient traffic control to assure complete safety. Alan Valentine, chief of the new Federal Wage-Price Control lAgency, observed to the (Senate Banking Com mittee: iWe must look for and find very soon a plateau where prices and wages are generally in balance . . . Once that point is reached, we must stabilize there and hold it" He expressed the hope that the United States now is near such a point of balance. John (W. Snyder, Secretary of the Treasury, acknowledged before an other committee that price and wage controls probably will have to be put into effect in order to prevent dama ging inflation. - Mr. Valentine took note of the fac tor which most compels delay atthe moment in imposing such regulations when he said the government has not yet mobilized a staff to carry out the controls if it wished to do so. The recruiting and organizing of such a staff should be pushed with greatest possible rapidity, for whether Amen-' cans like it or not, and whether a wage-price plateau can be found or not, it looks likely that such controls will be needed. The very mention of the size of an administrative staff necessary indi cates a major reason for wishing to postpone an economic freeze order as lone as possible and to avoid rc en tireiy if that can be done. As has been pointed out In these columns, willingness to bear heavy taxes, to cut non-defense spending, and to restrict sharply all kinds of credit are im portant contributions to this purpose. Not only does that type of austerity help to avert direct wage and price controls if such controls can be avert ed, but it helps fundamentally to make price and .wage controls workable if those controls have to be adopted.
