Good Seed For Crops
The fanners of Perquimans County
are about to begin their new year.
They -will soon initiate the crops upon
which they will depend for a living in
come. Into the uncertain lap of the
weather and the market, they consign
their fortune and the well-being of the
families for whilch they labor.
It is not a very inviting prospect for
farmers. What the future holds, in
regard to yield, is hard to determine,
What may be expedted in the way of
prices is also uncertain. There are
risks that are inevitable but no un
necessary liability should be callously
or wantonly added.
Too otften a farmer plants his crop
without considering the great import,
ance of the seed. Heavy losses result
every year, in every crop, from poor
seed. Good seed is important. It is
the good beginning which enalbles one
farmer .to outdo his neighbor. Good
seed will mean good stands, healthy
plants, with ability to live and grow
and to withstand temporary setbacks.
We urge every farmer who reads
this article to determine to plant only
the best seed in the spring. This is
one expenditure which will pay big
dividends. . i
ed time and for a particular purpose
without endangering the permanence
of their , free institutions. Neverthe
less, they should be alert, now as al
ways, in order to safeguard the liber
ties that individuals cherish. : ;

Inheritance
Human beings, aEve today in Per
quimans County, should appreciate the
inheritance that has come ito them
from men and women who have lived
in the years that are gone-. This may
seem like a commonplace declaration
but it involves an understanding ac
ceptance of the institutions which
have been bequeathed to us.
Those living today arrived in a
worlds which had been developed by
others. They enjoyed modern family
life, churches, schools, governments
and, be it added, an economic arrange-
ment that makes for their comfortable
living.
These things have not always been
in the world. They have been slowly
developed, often by the blood, as well
as the sweat, of humanity. In casually
accepting them and in carelessly mis
using them, we exhibit a form of ig
norance which is perilous to human
progress.
As we comprehend in full the value
of the gifts of our ancestors, we are
apt to safeguard; them. We would
not willingly destroy in a day, or in a
few years, the fruit of humanity's
struggle through many centuries. Nat
urally, we benefit by what men have
wrought before us and the only honor
able course in life is to preserve thess
gifts for generations yet unborn.
Democracy Is Not ,
The Way Of War
As the people of the United States
gird themselves for the burden of cre
ating and supporting an adequate de
fense force, they should understand
that the ways of democracy are not
the ways of war. 1 Whenever a free'
people find themselves engaged in
combat, or preparing for a possible
attack, they must willingly surrender
some of the privileges which belong
to free men. ( "'
The cry is sometimes heard that
any abrogation of the rights of the
people means the end of liberty. This
view is not supported by history be
cause the people of this country have,
in prior wars, relinquished some pri
vileges on order to adequately meei a
national emergency. When the Job is
finished, they readily reassert their
power and once more enjoy full and
unfettered freedom. . , . ".
Before Wor'd War II, there was
talk in this country of the death of
democracy if, the nation became en
gaged in war. The concentration of
authority necessary to throw the full
power of the natSon into 'the conflict
caused some-augmentation of power
in the hands' of officials. The same
thing was true in , connection with
World War I.; However, when the
crisis passed, there was a natural re
surgence of individual freedom.
The people of tide country, while
devoted to yie ideal of - individual
liberty, understand that they can dele
gate authority to officials for a Kmit-
or this notice will be pleaded in bar. quimans County,, N. C. beginning at
of their recovery. All persons indebt
