TOPPING Assistant County Agent Perquimans County, which has long keen recognized as a producer of large quantities of hogs, but has never teen considered as a producer of quali ty hogs, gave the leading Duroc pure bred breeders of the state a race for top honors at the Rocky Mount Du roc Show and Sale on February 1. The three leading Duroc breeders in the county proved at this show and sale that Perquimans County has some of die highest quality hogs in the state. WV S. Benton of Betvidere, Clarence Chappell, Jr., State 4-H Meat Animal winner of iBelvidere, and Preston Nix on of Hertford who sponsors the 4-H , purebred pig program of Perquimans County, all , had entries , at Rocky Mount. iW. S. Benton showed and sold the third place gilt in the blue ribbon group." He bought the second placed gilt and the litter mate to the first placed gilt in the show to add to his 'hrefediwg stock. Clarence Chappell, Jr., placed two high quality gilts in .the red ribbon group. (All hogs were placed in Blue, Red or White groups. Blue being high and white being low. This farm had not been in cultivation for a number of years. Mr. Lassiter had a ditch cut on three sides of the farm with a dragline.' This ditch will serve iboth to take water from culti vated land and 'to intercept any woods : water that might flaw toward fields. He is having the tap ditches cleaned out by hand labor. IW. Ray White is having the lower end of his lead ditch cleaned out. with a dragline. C. E. Matthews is having a lead ditch cleaned out by hand. The wa ter bogged up in the upper end of this ditch. These ditches were surveyed and grade stakes set by Soil Conserva tion Service Technicians working with the Albemarle District. Soil Conservation Service Techni cians have taken approximately 200 soil samples for farmers this winter.
