(birth of two famous Americans Ab raham Lincoln, on the 12th, and George Washington, on the 22nd. The anniversaries of the birth of these two men calls to mind the greatness of these eminent Americans and the thought that the Perquimans Weekly might well recommend the example of their lives to the young people of our community. It is not necessary or us to eulogize ithem. Nothing that we could say would add to their statue. IBettter writers than we have recorded their deeds for posterity. But the youth of our country will make no mistake in familiarizing themselves with the lives of both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Excess Profits Out of War The Government of the United States is now busy making contracts with industrial concerns for. the pro duction of weapons add other items needed in the defense of this coun try, 'y '- Just as in 1939 and 1940, the Gov ernment discovers that industries are not so anxious for governmental con tracts and that it is the habit of many " industries to "hold up" the Govern- ment for exorbitant profits. In the pmftnrencv that existed nrior to World , War II, industrial leaders exadted their tribute from the nation and no one yet knows the amazing profits made by industries in connection with our war effort. . lit is perfectly natural perhaps, for industrial geniuses to look with de lightful anticipation upon the prospect - o - of fat profits in connection with our present emergency. Only simple minded Americans will believe that the Government does not pay-through-the-nose for the products of industry whenever it gets in a jam and needs the immediate production of defense . items.;; ''.!, After World War I, there was an investigation into the profits of those who manufactured the material of warfare. The people of the country were astounded alt the profits of the munitions-makers and others .and their disgust at the green of Ameri can industry was largely responsible for the wave of isolationism which swept over the nation. No similar investigation has been conducted into the profits of Ameri can industry in the operations off World War H. N"ewspaper associations and radio commentators rarely call attention to the astronomical profits that industry eracts from government in connection with the manufacture of iwar necessities. JNevermeiess, tne cost df defending America is greatly enhanced by exorbitant and excessive profits that industry exacts in connec tion with assisting in the defense of the United States. ' J . : We see no reason why the govern We see no reason why the govern ment of this country, when it is call ing young men to the colors, to die in defense of the. nation, should not require industry, which includes cor porations and individuals, to make a contribution to the defense of the na tion. After all, the existence of the United States means the protection of the industry that enjoys fat profits in a land of plenty. There is no excuse for corporations and individuals, in times Of national emergency, to make greater profits than are normal in .the course of peace-time years.
