THE PERQUIMANS WEEXLY, ESSTFO&D, N. 0., FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 1951 PAGE SEVEN su;:day school lessoii THE JERUSALEM BO AD International Sunday School Lesson for March 4,1951. Memory Selection: "'Whomsoever would become great among you, shall ' he your servant." JMark 10: 46. J Lesson Text: Mark 3545. We now come to the last month of the life of Jesus. His ministry in Peres was about over and the time for his final visit to Jerusalem was approaching. Realizing what the con sequences of this visit would be, we see Jesus resolutely and steadfastly setting his face "to go to Jerusalem." Sensing the seriousness of the situ ation, his disciples were troubled. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, stop ped and, taking the twelve aside from the crowded highway, he tried to make . them realize the fate that lay in store for him. Verses 33 and 34 briefly foretell his arrest and trial before the iSanhedrin, his being ridiculed and punished before being put to death by the Romans and, finally, his resurrec tion three days later. The disciples could not understand or grasp the facts. Their ideas of the Messiah had been the traditional ones of glory and power, and this was entirely foreign to their previous conception. Abnost immediately following this conversation with his disciples, two of them, James and John, who had been closest to him, showed how completely they had missed the spirit of his ministry. Drawing Jesus - aside, they made a request of him that he grant them special preference when he es tablished his Kingdom, thinking that it would be an earthly kingdom. Mat thew's gospel tells us that Salome, their mother, was with them as they . made their selfish request When Jests askedTTthey were able "to drink of the cup that I drink of," they confidently asserted their readi ness, little imagining that a few days , later, he would undergo the terrible death on the cross. . Jesus did not grant their-request; declaring that it was not his right to confer these coveted places. In the kingdom of God, one must be fitted and able to occupy the post received. It is not a matter of favor or friendship, or in fluence, but entirely one of desert. Hearing of the request of James and John, the other ten disciples were naturally indignant. (Solemnly calling them into conference, Jesus sought to correct their viewpoint. He re minded them that" "Whomsoever will be great among you, shall be your minister." Whomsoever will be great among you, shall be great by being your servant; and if there be any yet more ambitious and desirous to be chief leader, then he must be "your slave," says Henry Ward' Beecher. "All the great rulers of this world stand above glorying in their wis dom and strength and power, and look down on men. If you would become the great ruler, you must go as Christ is going, to the bottom of human life, and work up from the lowest toward the highest, from weakness toward strength. God identified himself, not with crowns,, not with sceptres, not with thrones, not with opportunities, not with all that man admires and . seeks." - .While ambition in itself is no sin, Jesus made it plain that the way to success in God's kingdom is not through influence but through self- denial. We have to earn the highest places there through service through self-denying service. After all, whose . commendation do you most desire , that of the world, which today ap plauds and tomorrow condemns, or that of him, who says, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant T" BE A BETTIjJR CITIZEN! 1 " GO TO SOME . NEXT'bUTpAY f tetany Aaro&sr A little group of fisherman sat around an open fire on the shore of the sea of Galilee. In their midst was the greatest Teacher the world has ever known, Jesus of Nazafeth. When they had finished their simple breakfast He turned to one of them and said, "Simon, do you love me more than the others?" The burly chap, who had thrice denied his Master, winced. "You know, Lord, that I love you." Then Jesus said, "FEED MY LAMBS 1" The echo of that simple commandment has never died away. It rings from the belfry of every Christian church. It calls men from spiritual starvation to a full and abundant life of service to others. Attend and support a church in your community.
