SOAY SCHOOL LESSON International Sunday School Lesson For (March 18 - . , Memory Selection: - "Not what I ' will, but what thou wilt.'' Mark 14:36. 'Lesson Text: Mark 14:22-26, 32-36. We come now to the last twenty-) four hours of the earthly life of Je sus. Earlier, he had sent Peter and John into Jerusalem to make arrange ments for observing the Passover meal the last meal he would eat with his disciples before his crucifixion. Jesus knew that' Judas was plotting with his enemies, therefore, he . did not let this disciple know in advance where they would gather for the evening. . ?-:.. When the disciples gathered in the upper room of the home of the mother of John IMark, there was again a disgraceful dissension among them as to who should, have the seats of honor, which spirit Jesus rebuked by assuming the role of a servant and washing the disciples' feet. Gat ing and drinking with them, he es tablished the precedent for the Lord's Supper, which is observed by his fol lowers today, in memory of his life and sacrificial death. During the eating of the meal, Je- 8us astonished his little group of in i timate associates by declaring that ; one of them would betray him. ; In dismay, each inquired if St could pos sibly be he. Apparently, to' John alone did Jesus indicate who his be trayer was and, shortly thereafter, in a quiet tone, instructed Judas to pro ceed With his nefarious plans. It may seem strange that all of the dis ciples inquired as to their possibility of guilt : It reveals,, at least, that none of them, up to this time, had suspected the insincerity of Judas. There are two viewpoints on Judas. One holds, hfm up as the arch-traitor in the world's history. ' The Rev. R. C. Gillie explains his attitude: "No man can live constantly with a very good person,- who loves him, and give in return neither sympathy nor loy alty, without coming in-time to feel hatred. It is impossible to go on re ceiving love and playing the hypo crite and remain indifferent Thus, in the -last, year of his life,. Judas' love for Jesus changed slowly to dis taste and dislike, and, at last, to a kind of hatred. Bfe T&f ; himself to be' an almost 'ruined man. His bubble had Iburst." On the other hand, the New Out look finds Judas' sin, to be more un derstandable: ''A growing distrust of the methods by which Jesus was to bring in his Kingdom and a grow ing impatience with him -for refusing to adopt and more practical and rat ional ideals. (We have' no reason to think that Judas' discipleship was a mockery from the beginning; it prob ably had quite as much sincerity in it as had any of the others. But he had come to the place where "Jesus' Way of patient goodness and endur ing love seemed futility and fool ishness, and he determined to try a way of hjs own. It' doesn't look as if - Judas' sin was such a terribly, unique one after all; what else is any -man guilty of when he says Jesus' gospel of love cannot' be made to work in a world such as ours is, and the Beauti tudes and the Golden Rule are sen timental nonsense?' Judas, having gone, Jesus told his disciples that all of them would be offended with him, whereupon Peter, with his usual impetuously, insisted that he -would die before he would deny his Lord. Jesus warned him that before daylight, he would deny him three times, which subsequently came to pass as Peter, alarmed by hls.om danger, strenuously insisted ta v"i us people, that he -dij r"t "c:r7 J: sus. 5 Finallyj';made':conscict:3 cf desertion by a glance from Je3U3, ra ter was grief-stricken. In h:3 sub sequent life, by courageously cham pioning the new faith, peter . proved his fidelity and courage, of which he boasted, eventually facing death with out denying his Master. Following the Last -Supper, Jesus went out. to the .Garden, of Gethsem ane, where he had often before gone to pray. After a period of agonizing braver to God. he was albie to say "Not my will tut- thine be done." Through prayer," he was strengthened to face death !and to take without a murmur all that Uy before htm. Pray er builds reserves in the souls, of men; it 'rives th(m Strength in facing death and, jn facing, fte- that nothing else can give.' Reserve power, gained in prayer, made Christ victorious and it may the people; who looked upward on him on the cross, declare, " iTiuy, this man was the son of God!" A Christian home, Christian teachers and Christian pals could have kept him away from the alley on a highroad. One of the priceless opportunities Amer ica offer her children is the advantage of religious training. A child cannot accept this opportunity himself. It is up to Ms parents to recognize its essential value, and to cooperate with and support the Church in Its life-building work. 7 does I mm- 1 "H'taJaJl- mmm. THE CHTTPrw rz-in ...
