The North Carolina Highway 5om
mission has more than $21,000,000
worth of projects under construction
this spring on its primary highway
system along with hundreds of miles
of secondary road paving,
More work k in progress than at
any time since World War u.
, The 29 major projects include sev
eral million-dollar bridges in Eastern
' Carolina and numerous relocations of
principal through-highways. At least
two segments of four-Jane boulevards
are under construction in the Pied
mont section with more planned later
this summer.
Funds to perform this work have
been made available in part through
utilization of the 1200,000,000 highway
bond issue for secondary road needs,
leaving other highway funds free for
primary road "work. Governor Scott
- has earmarked all surplus funds pro
duced by increased receipts from auto
mobile use taxes for the primary high-1
way system. Over $15,000,000 in sur
plus funds have been used on some
dozen important primary highway pro
jects considered most urgent by nigh-
way engineers. , These include the new
four-lane highways to be constructed
. between Charlotte and Concord and
between Spencer and Lexington on
US 29, a new 50-mile by-pass border
ing the cities of High Point, Greens
boro, Burlington and Graham on US
70, and a new location route for US
70 between Ridgecrest and Old (Fort,
also four-lane.
Among the, important bridge pro
jects now under way or about to begin
are the following: The Roanoke
Sound Bridge between Nags Head and
Manteo, the Chowan (River Bridge at
Edenton, the Neuse River Bridge at
New Bern, a newly located structure
across the Cape 'Fear River near Acme
-in Brunswick County, a two-lane addi
tion to the- Yadkin (River Bridge be
twen Davidson and Rowan County on
US 29f the Yadkin River Bridge be
tween Yadkin and Forsyth counties,
and the French Broad River Bridge
near Hot Springs.
During the past two years the High
way Commission ha paved over 6,000
miles of farm-to-market roads under
the $200,000,000 bond issue program.
Another 9,000 miles of county roads
have been stabilized for. all-weather
travel. This work has been accom
plished with "about- -one-half of the
bond rovneif. '', Workwill continue1 oft
the secondary, road 'program during
the next two years."' J "s -
Meanwhile, 'Df. Henry W. Jordan,
Highway Commission" Chairman, has
announced that special emphasis will
be placed on primary road construc
tion, using as a blueprint a special
survey completed early this year which
showed that North Carolina's main
line highways have over $305,000,000
in deficiencies.
